Texas USA Wrestling and World Sports Alliance, the "Official International Exchange Coordinator of USA Wrestling" are teaming up to bring international wrestling competition to Texas. A field of 24 teams will be invited to participate in the Texas International Wrestling Festival, which will take place in Dallas, June 17-20, 2005. The Texas International Wrestling Festival is actually three separate events. The main event will be an international freestyle dual meet tournament, for high school-aged athletes. This event will be run similar to the USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior Dual Championships except individual high school and club teams will be invited to participate. Following the dual meet tournament will be a one-day technique clinic, featuring some of the nation's top clinicians and a one-day international training camp. The training camp will mix technique and live wrestling sessions and will be run by both US and foreign coaches. Teams from New Zealand and Russia have already stated their intent to participate and others are expected to attend as well. The cost to participate is a flat fee of $1,000 per team, if registered by April 15th ($1,250 after April 15th), which covers all three events. There will be 11 weight categories contested in the "duals," but teams may submit rosters with up to 16 athletes. Coaches attend free and are not limited. With 16 athletes on a team, the cost comes to less than $63 per athlete. Wade Genova, President of World Sports Alliance said, "Our goal is to bring international competition to as many US wrestlers as possible. We've kept the price very affordable." Individual athletes, without a team, may also participate in the Texas International Wrestling Festival but must register for each of the three events separately. A dual meet team will be formed for individual athletes but space will be limited. A wrestler's application will only be accepted for the International Duals if an opening is available in his weight category. The International Dual Meet Championship and Training Camp are for high school athletes only but wrestles as young as 8 can participate in the Technique Clinic. Because space is limited, interested coaches and athletes should contact World Sports Alliance as soon as possible at 1 866-972-8687.
