NWMA names National Wrestling Journalism Awards: Wrestling USA, Moore, Sprague, Gatewood, Bevilacqua

ST. LOUIS, MO. - The National Wrestling Media Association, the national professional organization for wrestling journalists, has named the recipients of its Annual Wrestling Journalist Awards. The NWMA has honored the top wrestling journalists in the following categories: Broadcaster of the Year, Print Journalist of the Year, Photographer of the Year, Publicist/SID of the Year, Publication of the Year and Web Page of the Year. Candidates were nominated by the NWMA members.    Wrestling Publication of the Year - Wrestling USA Magazine    Wrestling USA is a national wrestling magazine, based in Missoula, Montana, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The magazine covers wrestling on all levels, but specializes in high school wrestling coverage. It was founded as Scholastic Wrestling News 40 years ago by Lanny Bryant and two other wrestling coaches, but in its early years became a family business for the Bryant family. In the 1970's it changed name to Wrestling USA. The publication is recognized for its color photography, features, posters and rankings. Lanny Bryant is Editor in Chief, and his son Cody Bryant in Managing Editor. Ann Bryant is assistant editor and Jackie Bryant is the Design and Art Editor. The National Editor is Dan Fickel and Cal Johnson is the contributing editor. Wrestling USA also hosts the Dream Team Classic, an all-star event featuring a national high school team against a state team. The event moves around the nation, with the host state providing a team. This year, its 9th season, the event is in Texas, and in addition to the boys match, there will be a girls dual meet for the first time. Lanny Bryant received the Order of Merit from the National Wrestling Hall of Fame for his service to the sport.      Wrestling Print Journalist of the Year - Roger Moore, Stillwater News Press    Moore has served as sports editor of the Stillwater News Press since 1989, and provided extensive coverage of college, high school and international wrestling for the newspaper. He covers the Oklahoma State Univ. wrestling team, which has won the last two NCAA Div. I team titles and enters the 2005 NCAA Championships as the No. 1 ranked team. He has also written numerous stories on the Gator WC athletes who live and train in Stillwater, including three members of the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team (Eric Guerrero, Jamill Kelly, Daniel Cormier). His high school coverage is detailed, including regular stories on state-powers Perry High School and Stillwater High School. Moore was named Wrestling Writer of the Year by the Oklahoma State Coaches Association this year. Moore was a youth and high school wrestler from Stillwater, prior to a stint in the U.S. Army, where he served in the Persian Gulf. Upon leaving the service, he went to Oklahoma State, where he was the sports editor and a reporter for the Daily O'Collegian. He worked a year for First Down Publications, covering Oklahoma State sports, prior to accepting the sports editor position at the News Press.     Wrestling Photographer of the Year - Marc Sprague, Portland, Ore.    Sprague started taking wrestling photography back in the 1970's when he became a wrestling coach on the club levels in the Portland community. He coached his sons Matt and Marc, as well as many talented local wrestlers, and took their pictures at the wrestling tournaments he attended. The club teams were very successful, the USA Oregon club and the USA Cobra club, and many of the athletes became very successful (Dan Russell, Joe Russell, Matt Lindland, Oscar Wood, etc.). Sprague's photos appeared in numerous wrestling publications, including Amateur Wrestling News and USA Wrestler. For many years, he published the state magazine, Oregon Wrestling News, and numerous of his photos appeared in print there. Sprague covered wrestling at many levels, including high school, college and international levels. A number of his images are displayed in college wrestling rooms across the nation. He also supplied images to USA Wrestling from a number of events such as the World Cup and the U.S. Nationals. This summer, he also shot images at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Sprague is known for capturing dramatic images of wrestling action, using his experience as a wrestling coach to anticipate the action and take the shot at the exact right time.      Wrestling SID/Publicist of the Year - Emily Gatewood, Univ. of Missouri    Gatewood is a Media Relations Associate at the Univ. of Missouri, working in its Sports Information Department. Gatewood has served there for two years, and handles the varsity wrestling and softball teams for the athletic department. She has helped promote the athletes and team for the Big XII program, which has improved dramatically in recent seasons. With the NCAA Div. I Championships held in St. Louis, Mo. for the last two years, Gatewood has served as the host SID for the tourn amen t, working with the NCAA and the St. Louis Sports Commission. Prior to joining the staff at Missouri, Gatewood worked two years as a graduate assistant for sports information at the Univ.of Nebraska, where she handled a number of sports and assisted at the NCAA Women's Gymnastics Championships and the Big XII Track and Field Championships. She received her bachelors degree at Elon College in North Carolina, where she studied corporate and broadcast communications and her graduate degree at the Univ. of Nebraska.       Wrestling Broadcaster of the Year - Chris Bevilacqua, College Sports Television    Bevilacqua is a founder and serves as Executive Vice President of College Sports Television (CSTV) , the new national cable television network which specializes in coverage of college sports. He developed the concept for CSTV, and was among the executive teamwhich turned this growing and successful network into reality. CSTV has broadcast a large number of wrestling events since its inception, including a full series of college wrestling dual meets and tournaments. There was over a dozen major college matches this season, including the Big Ten and EWL Championships. CSTV has also featured international wrestling, airing events such as the Sunkist Kids International and the Titan Games. A number of feature documentaries on wrestling have aired, including in-depth shows on Dan Gable, Rulon Gardner and the Univ. of Minnesota wrestling team. College wrestling is also covered extensively on CSTV's sports news shows. Bevilacqua has a strong background in wrestling. He was a talented high school wrestler in New York and Oklahoma, winning state freestyle titles in both states. He was a two-time NCAA All-American for Penn State, a freshman All-American and a team captain. Bevilacqua also won an Espoir National title, and competed for the United States at the Espoir World Championships in Anaheim, Calif. He had extensive professional broadcast experience prior to CSTV, working with Major League Baseball (and its Baseball Network), NBC Sports and with Nike.      Wrestling Web Page of the Year - WrestlingReport.com    WrestlingReport.com was founded in 1995 by Bruce Closson, who serves as editor and webmaster for the website. Closson has developed a "fan-based website" which provides extensive coverage of college and high school wrestling in the East, as well as other national wrestling news. He has assembled a team of editors and reporters who provide extensive materials for each of the sections. His college editors include Allen Brown and Greg Henry. WrestlingReport.com covers all of the Div. I conferences in the East, develops national and "Atlantic" rankings, and is the official web page of the EWL and the EIWA conferences. The high school editors include Joe Demore, Carl Flinn, Ken Wunderley and John Hoekel, with focus on prep wrestling throughout the region. The website has a very active bulletin board. In addition, recently WrestlingReport.com has posted video on its site, including key bouts and matches of interest to the readership.
