St. Louis, Mo. - Coming into this year's NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, many coaches felt that the deepest weight classes were 157 and 197 lbs. Those opinions may have been proven correct as two of the top six seeds at 197, Chris Skretkowicz of Hofstra and J.D. Bergman of Ohio State, lost in the first round. Skretkowicz, the third seed in the tournament and a strong contender to win the national title, was pinned late in the first period by sophomore Daren Burns of North Carolina-Greensboro in the biggest upset so far in this year's tournament. Bergman, who also lost in the first round last year before wrestling back to third place, was ridden out in a tiebreaker period by Boise State's Casey Phelps in a 3-2 loss. Bergman was the sixth seed in the tournament. Burns will next face freshman Matt Koz of Minnesota, while Phelps will meet up with 11th-seeded B.J. Padden of Nebraska. There was also a major upset at 157, as The Citadel's Travis Piccard, a junior, downed Muzafar Abdurakhmanov of American, 7-3. Piccard controlled the entire match in the neutral position and sealed the win with a takedown with only 45 seconds left in the match. Piccard will next face Chris Bitetto of Northern Iowa in the second round. C.P. Schlatter, one of Minnesota's many freshmen, also recorded a first-round upset, downing All-American Derek Zinck of Lehigh, 7-4, setting up a match between Schlatter and Iowa's Joe Johnston. Other top seeded wrestlers to fall were Oregon's Shane Webster, who was defeated by Matt Pell of Missouri 8-5 at 184 lbs., and Tanner Garrett of Navy, who lost a 3-2 decision to Ohio State's Kirk Nail at 285 lbs. The upset bug nearly caught up to a few of the top wrestlers in the nation this morning, including undefeated Nate Gallick of Iowa State, who overcame riding time to win 2-0 over Jordan Leen of Cornell at 141. Gallick was ridden out in the second period by Leen before scoring a reversal in the third period after Leen chose to start from the top. That reversal was all Gallick needed in the win. Gallick is now 26-0 on the year. Three other wrestlers also stayed undefeated following the first round - Troy Letters of Lehigh is 23-0 at 165, Greg Jones of West Virginia is 21-0 at 184 and Steve Mocco of Oklahoma State is 33-0 at 285. Another Cyclone wrestler, second-seeded Kurt Backes, had to rely on a defensive fall to defeat Eastern Michigan's Ed Magrys at 184. Backes trailed Magrys 6-3 with only one minute remaining in the match when off a Magrys shot, Backes was able to sit on his opponent's chest and score the fall. Also avoiding a major upset was second-seeded Shawn Bunch of Edinboro, who held on for a 9-8 win against Michigan's Mark Moos at 133. Bunch led late in the match 8-4 before Moos started a furious rally headed by two takedowns, but he could not turn Bunch to win the match. Fourth-seeded Vic Moreno of Cal Poly had to go overtime with Robbie Preston of Harvard for a 3-1 win at 125. Neither Moreno or Preston could finish on their shots, but in the overtime, Moreno was able to get deep on a low single-leg and finish near the edge of the mat for the win. Two-time defending champion Oklahoma State is tops in the team standings following the first session with 23.5 points. The Cowboys had eight of nine wrestlers advance to this evening's second round. All eight of those wrestlers scored bonus points by winning by major decision, technical fall or pin. Minnesota, the only team to qualify all 10 of its wrestlers, sits in second place, just a half point behind Oklahoma State. The Gophers also advanced eight wrestlers to the second round. Cornell is in third place with 18.5 team points followed by a three-way tie for fourth place with 16 team points between Illinois, Iowa and Iowa State. The second round and first round of consolations will begin at 6:30 p.m. (Central Time). TheMat.com will provide complete coverage. Notes: All 330 wrestlers made weight this morning… The only wrestler with 40 wins coming into this tournament was Marc Allemang of Duquesne, who won his morning match as well… Three alternates are competing in this tournament - Andy Rios of Indiana (197) replaces Mike Simpson of Indiana, Brenden McLean of the Air Force (197) replaces Christian Bowerman of Fresno State and Mike Spaid of Bloomsburg (285) replaces Jared Villers of West Virginia… Three teams were given official warnings for questioning the referee, Pittsburgh, The Citadel and Wisconsin…
