One of the best races in the country is at 197 lbs. This weight class is wide open and includes a national champion, Jake Rosholt of Oklahoma State, a two-time national runner-up, Jon Trenge of Lehigh, and a one-time national runner-up, Scott Barker of Oregon. Chris Sretkowicz of Hofstra is also in the title hunt. Trenge earned the top seed this year. He defeated Rosholt twice and Barker once. He also lost to Skretkowicz. Trenge's strength and quickness are the perfect mix for a 197-pounder, but he will have to be careful of the officials. Twice this year, Trenge has been disqualified from matches, which in a referee's eyes means that he probably cannot be quite as physical. Rosholt, the second seed, defeated Skretkowicz and Barker twice each. However, he still would have most likely had the top seed had he not lost to B.J. Padden of Nebraska in the Big XII finals. Rosholt is still only a junior, but he is as good of a competitor as anyone. He landed on the same side of the bracket as Skretkowicz, which if all things work out, could match him up with Barker in the NCAA finals again. Skretkowicz has one of those really long bodies which makes him so tough to score on. But he is still an average wrestler on his feet. It is when he gets on top that he is so dangerous. If these other wrestlers can avoid the bottom position, Skretkowicz will have a tough time advancing through to the finals. Barker returned this year after being kicked off Missouri's team at the start of last year. He then transferred to Oregon. He started the year a little rusty, but one year of no wrestling will do that, even to an NCAA runner-up. Barker still has incredible strength, but he is vulnerable on his feet. In 2003, Barker lost in the finals to Rosholt, who was just a freshman then. He would love for a rematch in the finals to end his career. Three other All-Americans also come back this year - Ryan Bader of Arizona State, J.D. Bergman of Ohio State and Sean Stender of Northern Iowa. Bader is still a consistent wrestler, but has yet to put together a complete tournament worthy of putting him in the category of serious title contender. He also drew Tyrone Byrd in the first round of this year's tournament, possibly the toughest first-round draw in this entire tournament for a seeded wrestler. Bergman, as many will remember, lost his first match last year before wrestling all the way back to third place. He has struggled at some points this year, but has picked up his tempo in the last month. Stender is also a quality contender for this title. Last year, he was within 15 seconds of being in the NCAA finals. This year, he lost close matches to Trenge, Rosholt and Skretkowicz. But he also lost twice to Byrd. Two freshmen that have really come on this year are Philip Davis of Penn State and Wynn Michalak of Central Michigan. Both have posted some big wins, and Michalak even earned a seed at this year's tournament. However, in order to place, they are going to have to knock off at least one All-American. Davis would have to go through Bader in the second round and Michalak would have to defeat Stender in the second round as well. Michalak posted a win over Bader and lost to Stender at the National Duals. Top 4 Seeds: 1. Jon Trenge (Lehigh), 2. Jake Rosholt (Oklahoma State), 3. Chris Skretkowicz (Hofstra), 4.
