For three of USA Wrestling's grass-roots coaches February 18-26 were nine days that they will never forget. The coaches that work almost exclusively in their own states were a part of the first international Silver Level Coaches College. This trip to Cuba was part of the National Teams Winter Tour schedule, and gave coaches Aldo Mesa of Arizona, Shane Tisdale of Michigan; and Larry Holloway of Georgia an up-close look at the other side of wrestling and the world. The coaches, who paid for all of their own costs for the trip, traveled alongside the Greco-Roman and Freestyle National Team athletes. While the athletes focused on the business of making weight and wrestling, the coaches were able to spend time with the assigned tour coaches. Accompanying the Greco-Roman team were coaches Chris Saba, Dan Russell, and National Coach Steve Fraser. Leading the Freestyle team was led by Dan Chaid and Joe Seay. All of the developmental coaches on the trip enjoyed how open the tour coaches were to answering questions and involving them in the details of the trip. Shane Tisdale was able to jump in as a workout partner for one of the Greco-Roman wrestlers after the tournament when the team trained with the Cuba National Team at their training center in Havana. Larry Holloway expressed appreciation for the access to America's best wrestlers. "The chance to meet, observe and work with some of the best athletes in the world created a learning experience second to none. Observing the wrestling technique and talent of these elite athletes gives me more to take back to my club and boys," said Holloway. Aldo Meza, who is fluent in Spanish, was a popular person during his time in Cuba. Athletes and coaches sought Meza out for everything from changing money to ordering dinner. Meza especially enjoyed getting to know the freestyle wrestlers after they were done with competition. Meza was able to interview Cuban sensation Yoel Romero for the upcoming restructured Bronze Course. "All of the wrestlers were great to be around. It's one of the great things about our sport that the best wrestlers in the country are so approachable. This was definitely an experience that I'm glad I jumped at," said Meza. Highlights for the week included witnessing Justin Ruiz (in Greco-Roman) and Sammie Henson (in freestyle) win titles as well as Stephen Abas' semifinal upset of the Olympic Champion at 60 kg. All of the coaches also had plenty of time to see how people live in Cuba whether visiting the "book fesitival" of Saint Spiritus, or walking in the footsteps of Ernest Hemmingway's Old Havana. The Silver College in Cuba was a great week for the coaches as they now begin to focus on completing the Silver Level Tasks to earn Silver Certification. Coach Holloway has completed his Silver previously and is now focused on completing his Gold Certification. All coaches stated that other coaches at the grass-roots level should get involved with an international trip through USA Wrestling. A similar trip is being prepared for coaches interested in attending the Senior World Championships in Budapest, Hungary. The trip will take place alongside of the training competition for all three Olympic styles for America's teams. This will be the first time in recent years that all three styles contest the World Championships in the same venue. More information on the cost and details of the trip will be forthcoming, but coaches are asked to plan for a nine-day trip with an estimated cost of $1,800.
