Iowa City, Iowa - If parity hasn't completely affected college wrestling at the NCAA Tournament, it has at least made its mark at the first session of the Big Ten Tournament on Saturday afternoon in front of 5,892 fans at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Five teams are within 10 points of the top spot in the team race, led by Illinois (56.5 pts.), the pre-season favorite to win the Big Ten Tournament for the second consecutive year. Minnesota is in second place with 55 team points, followed by Michigan (54), Indiana (52) and host Iowa (47) in the top five. Both Illinois and Michigan will have six wrestlers in this evening's semifinal round. Indiana and Minnesota have five semifinalists and Iowa has the biggest uphill battle of the five teams at the top with only four semifinalists. Defending NCAA finalist Kyle Ott (125 lbs.) led the Fighting Illini charge with an 18-3 technical fall win over Iowa's Charlie Falck in the quarterfinals. Ott will next face 2003 All-American Bobbe Lowe of Minnesota in the semifinals. Mark Jayne (133) and Alex Tirapelle (157), both All-Americans, were also dominant in their early-round matches. Top seeds Pete Friedl (174) and Brian Glynn (184) also advanced for the Illini. Michigan was led by the core of its lineup - the middle weights. All-American Ryan Bertin (157) recorded a technical fall in his quarterfinal match, and Ryan Churella (165), who moved up two weight classes this season, recorded a second-period fall in the quarterfinals. Mark Moos (133), who moved up one weight class two months ago, finally seems to have regained his form of this time one year ago when he was a favorite to win the NCAA Tournament. Moos dominated Tom Clum of Wisconsin 13-6, setting up a semifinal matchup with Mack Reiter of Minnesota. Indiana, the surprise team near the top of the points ladder after the first session, can control its own destiny this round, as Mike Simpson (141) will face Michigan's Josh Churella, Brandon Becker (157) will meet up with Bertin, Brady Richardson (174) will match up with Friedl and heavyweight Pat DeGain will wrestle Michigan's Greg Wagner in the semifinal round. Wins by Indiana in three of those four bouts could put them closer to their first Big Ten team title since 1943. Illinois has not won a Big Ten team title since 1953 and Michigan last won the crown in 1973. Minnesota last won the title in 2003. Illinois and Michigan wrestlers will not meet in any of the semifinal matches this evening, but they will have plenty of head-to-head matchups with Indiana, Iowa and Minnesota wrestlers. Iowa, the defending Big Ten team champion, suffered major setbacks when Alex Tsirtsis (141) and All-American Paul Bradley (184) were defeated in the quarterfinal round. Tsirtsis lost 3-1 to Mike Simpson of Indiana. Bradley was defeated by Ben Wissel of Purdue, also by a 3-1 score. The semifinal session will get underway at 6:00 p.m. (Central). Notes: Nine freshmen earned spots in the semifinal round: Mack Reiter (133) and Roger Kish (184) of Minnesota, Josh Churella (141) and Eric Tannenbaum (149) of Michigan, Ryan Lang (141), Jake Herbert (174) and Dustin Fox (285) of Northwestern, Craig Henning (149) of Wisconsin and Mark Perry (165)… The only semifinal match between two past All-Americans will be at 125 lbs. where Ott will face Lowe…
