CLEVELAND, Ohio - All six Mid-American Conference Wrestling teams head to Kent, Ohio this weekend for the 2005 MAC Wrestling Championship. Kent State University will host the two-day event this Friday and Saturday at Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center. Last year's championship featured Central Michigan, ranked No. 8 this season winning its third straight title, as the Chippewas led all teams with a total of 89 points. The five other teams in the field will be gunning for the Chippewas, including preseason favorite No. 22 Northern Illinois, which finished second at the 2004 MAC Championships. At the 125 pound weight class, the 2004 MAC Champion Mark McKnight returns ready to defend his title for the Bulls. However, heading into the tournament McKnight is not the top ranked wrestler in the weight class. That distinction belongs to CMU's Luke Smith. Also in the mix is last year's runner-up Kent State's Drew Opfer. Back at 133 pounds is last year's champion Northern Illinois Sam Hiatt. Hiatt will face strong competition from CMU's Jason Borrelli, UB's Mark Budd and Eastern Michigan's Phillip Plowman. Last year's champion at 141 pounds, Jason Mester of CMU, has graduated, leaving it open for a new champion. Looking to step into that title is UB's Dana Gingerich, CMU's Brandon Carter, KSU's Jason McGee and Ohio's Jim Fowler. CMU's Mark Disalvo is the favorite at the 149 pounds, as he is undefeated on the year in the MAC 5-0 and 28-5 on the year. At 157 pounds, Jake Percival 2004 national runner-up is the favorite. Percival was last year's champion and is 5-0 in MAC dual meets this year, 24-2 overall. Looking to knock off Percival will be CMU's Eric Nail, who is the No. 2 ranked wrestler in the conference and is 4-1 in MAC meets, 26-10 overall. In the 165 pounds last year's champion Eastern Michigan's J.J. Holmes has moved up to 174 pounds, leaving the championship open for a new winner. The favorite heading into the tournament is CMU's David Bolyard last year's runner-up, who is 5-0 in the MAC and 26-3 overall. Others going for the title are UB's Jake Blowers, NIU's Johnny Galloway and Ohio's Tony DaAnna. The 174 pound title is wide open as last year's champion Ed Pawlak of UB has graduated. Two wrestlers looking to claim the crown include CMU's Mitch Hancock, last year's runner-up, and Holmes, with league records of 5-0 and 4-1, respectively. 184 pound weight class is looking for a new champion as three time MAC champion Ben Heizer of NIU has graduated. EMU's Ed Magrys, KSU's Alex Carmargo and CMU's Alex Lammers last year's second, third, and fourth place finishers respectively are back with a chance to win the title. Ohio's 2004 runner-up Joel Weimer returns for a shot at the MAC title. Also shooting for a MAC title in the 197 weight class is UB's Harold Sherrell, CMU's Wynn Michalak and Kent State's Ben Rings. In the Heavyweight class, last year's champion Bill Stouffer of CMU has had a solid campaign 27-5 overall, 5-0 MAC. However he will face a challenge from 2003 MAC champion Kent State's Tomas Rodriguez who did not compete in 2003-04 due to an injury. Rodriguez returns this year with a record of 15-1 overall, 4-1 MAC. Throughout the two-day championship results and recaps will be posted on the KSU and MAC websites. Session I gets underway on Friday at Noon.
