With only two champions returning to defend their titles, the stage is set for a number of new wrestlers to make a splash at the 48th Annual NAIA Wrestling National Championships. Over 200 of the top NAIA wrestlers will meet at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa, March 4-5 to contend for the ultimate title. Currently ranked first in their weight classes, defending national champions Lindenwood University senior Andrew Bradbury (125) and Montana State University-Northern senior Stryder Davis (157) are strong contenders to obtain their second championships in a row. At 133 pounds, MSU-Northern transfer Brian Luna finished the season ranked No. 1 and is looking to add a NAIA championship to his roundabout wrestling career. Luna was a junior college national champion at Northwest College in 1999 and went on to Southern Colorado, where he was a NCAA Division II national runner-up. The next season, Southern Colorado dropped its wrestling program and Luna stepped back from the sport. At age 27, in his final semester of eligibility, Luna goes into nationals as the favorite at 133 pounds. Sophomore 141-pounder Brad Stockton from Waldorf College caused a stir at last year's nationals, placing fourth after losing 6-5 to eventual champion James Guizar from Menlo College. Currently ranked No.1, Stockton could see major competition from second-ranked Missouri Valley senior Paul Collum and third-ranked Bacone College junior Bryan Odle. The 149-pound weight class has seen some shake-ups this year, with MSU-Northern's defending champ Anthony Haukenberry dismissal from the team in Dec. 2004. Senior Dustyn Azure replaced Haunkenberry after sitting out two years with injuries and is currently ranked third. Embry-Riddle senior Tyler Moran goes in with the top ranking and Lindenwood junior Mike Rio is No. 2. At 165 pounds, Dana College senior Leister Bowling is ranked No.1 and will try to improve on last year's fourth place finish. Ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, juniors Jimmy Grochowsky from Southern Oregon and Aaron Jensen from MSU-Northern could be Bowling's top challengers. A second-place finish at last year's nationals could provide a spark for top-ranked 174-pounder David Rivera. The senior from Embry-Riddle fills out the top of the weight class with senior Keith Cupp from Cumberland College and freshman Jake Stevenson from Morningside College. Stevenson has had an impressive freshman campaign, ending the season with a 29-9 record. Last year, Southern Oregon junior David O'Brien also got a taste of the national championship match as the runner-up at 184 pounds. He will be tested by All-Americans MSU-Northern senior Jesse Juarez, University of Mary junior Elijah Simburger and Missouri Valley senior Mario Thomas. With the graduation of MSU-Northern's three-time champion Emmett Wilson at 197 pounds, Cumberland junior Eric Flinchum is the top contender. But University of Mary sophomore Jessie Laber and Lindenwood junior Robert Roszkiewicz should provide some stiff competition. Flinchum topped Roszkiewicz 1-0 at the National Duals in January. Last year's third-place finisher, Lindenwood senior Roger Miller is currently the top ranked heavyweight. With a fourth-place finish last year, Jamestown senior Brandon Lemer is ranked third. After making his debut on the varsity roster in January, MSU-Northern junior Chase Gormley finished the season as the No. 2 seed. With a cross-section of surprising newcomers, seasoned veterans and talented transfers, this year's NAIA National Championships competitors should prove to be an electrifying group for spectators in Sioux City. Lindenwood looks to continue successful season Although MSU-Northern and Missouri Valley have been the top teams in NAIA over the past 10 years, Lindenwood is trying to make its presence felt in the 21st century. Lindenwood won the National Championship in 2002 and finished second in 2003. In this year's team standings, it goes in with the top ranking after finishing fifth last year. Last year's champion MSU-Northern is ranked second, while Dana College is third. At the NWCA National Duals in Cleveland, Ohio, in January, Lindenwood proved its potential for dominance by winning its duals against MSU-Northern 26-16, Cumberland 21-12 and Missouri Valley 27-6. Joe Parisi is in his 10th season as head coach of Lindenwood and was named the 2002 NAIA Coach of the Year. Thirteen members of the Lindenwood team are making the trip to Nationals this year. New programs competing in Nationals Proving the popularity and success of wrestling at the NAIA level, five brand new programs have representatives at this year's national tournament. New programs, Newman University in Wichita, Kansas qualified eight wrestlers, University of Great Falls in Great Falls, Mont., has six, Bethel College in Mishawaka, Ind., has two , Campbellsville University in Campbellsville, Ky., qualified four and York College in York, Neb., will have two representatives. Morningside College is in its first season of wrestling since the 1978-1979 campaign and is sending is six wrestlers to the tournament. King College in Bristol, Tenn., will also be adding a NAIA wrestling program for the 2005-06 season. The growth of wrestling at the NAIA level is proof that wrestling remains a popular sport for collegiate male athletes.
