USA Wrestling has updated its new "Bout of the Week" on USA Wrestling's Members-Only website The featured match this week is the 1989 Michial Foy vs. Atanas Komchev men's Greco-Roman match at the World Championships of Wrestling in Martigny, Switzerland. Foy, a surprise member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic team, was still early in his career on the international level. Komchev was a 1988 Olympic gold medalist and one of the most successful Greco-Roman wrestlers in the world. This was a first-round match at 90 kg/198 lbs. at the World Championships, and Komchev was heavily favored. Foy made big news at the 1988 Olympic Trials, earning a spot on the U.S. Olympic team after wrestling Greco-Roman for only a few months. Foy beat 1995 World Champion Mike Houck in a memorable three-match series in Pensacola, Fla. at the Olympic Trials, with a number of outstanding throws. What made it even more remarkable is that Foy was competing with a broken hand. He came into Greco-Roman wrestling after a college career that showed promise, but did not result in any championships. He competed at Triton Junior College under the legendary Art Kraft, then went on to wrestle on the varsity team at the Univ. of Minnesota. Foy was tall and lean and showed tremendous athletic skills, but really put his wrestling together when he became a Senior-level athlete. Foy competed at the 1988 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, but did not place. He went 1-2, pinning his opponent from Canada in 16 seconds, but losing to athletes from East Germany and West Germany. In 1989, Foy established his credentials as a top American star, winning his first U.S. Nationals title and claiming the spot on the World Team with a victory at the U.S. Olympic Festival. He also got more international experience, winning a gold medal at the Pan American Championships and a silver medal at the Concord Cup. Komchev entered the 1989 World Championships as one of the top stars in the field. He won the gold medal at Foy's weight class at the 1988 Olympic Games. It was his sixth World-level medal during the 1980's. He was a World silver medalist in 1982, 1983 and 1986, and a World bronze medalist in 1985 and 1987. He also boasted two European gold medals. The opening round match between Foy and Komchev was wide open, and featured many points scored by both wrestlers. After Foy won this exciting match, he went on a run. On the second day, he won three more matches, beating top stars from Cuba and the Soviet Union. On the final day of the three-day event, Foy beat West German Roger Gries for his fifth straight win, and made the gold-medal finals. Throughout the tournament, Foy was using many outstanding throws. In the finals, Foy was pinned by veteran star Maik Bullman of East Germany, and came home with the silver medal. It was to be the best international performance of Foy's career. After losing to Foy, Komchev placed 10th in the 1989 World Championships. He would win no more World-level medals in his career. Komchev just missed out at the 1991 World meet, placing fourth. His last major event was the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain, where he did not place in the top 10. Foy continued to excel on the national and international level for many more years. He had a rough road just to make the U.S. team, with stars Randy Couture and Derrick Waldroup in his division. Foy went on to win five U.S. Nationals titles. He competed in the 1990 World Championships, where he did not place. Foy got a second chance at Olympic glory when he won the Olympic Team Trials in 1992, and competed at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. Foy ended up sixth at the Barcelona Olympics. He won his first three matches, but then lost to Russian star Gogi Koguachvili in the fourth round. He lost his next two matches as well, to finish out of the medals. Bullman, who beat Foy in the 1989 World finals, ended up winning the Olympic gold medal at this weight class. His career was not over after the Barcelona Games, however. Foy competed in one more World Championships, placing fifth in the 1994 World meet. He won a silver medal at the 1995 Pan American Games. In a bid to make a third Olympic team, Foy fell short at the 1996 Olympic Team Trials, losing in the finals to long-time rival Derrick Waldroup in the Championship Series in three very heated matches. Foy actually made a late comeback during the end of the next four-year Olympic cycle, placing third at the 1999 U.S. Nationals, and eighth at the 2000 U.S. Nationals. U.S. fans will remember the power and versatility of Foy's wrestling skills. He also enjoyed wrestling freestyle, twice placing second at the U.S. Nationals in freestyle. In 1991, Foy qualified for the finals at the U.S. Nationals in both styles. Event organizers changed the schedule for the finals in order to allow him to wrestle in both gold-medal matches. Foy won the Greco-Roman gold medal and the freestyle silver medal that year at the U.S. Nationals. Foy will be remembered for using his height and physical talents to execute numerous memorable throws in Greco-Roman, and his fearlessness in combat at the highest levels. This popular feature will be changed on a regular basis, allowing members to enjoy many of the greatest matches in wrestling history. Posted in the archive section of the Members Only web page was the 1995 Elbrus Tedeev vs. Takahiro Wada men's freestyle match in the finals of the World Championships of Freestyle Wrestling in Atlanta, Ga. at 62 kg/136.5 lbs.
