Abas beats Olympic champion Quintana to reach gold-medal finals at Cerro Pelado Tournament in Cuba

In a battle of international stars, 2004 Olympic silver medalist Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif./Sunkist Kids) defeated 2004 Olympic champion Yandro Quintana of Cuba in the semifinals at 60 kg/132 lbs. during the second day of action at the Cerro Pelado Tournament held in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, on Feb. 25. The exact score of the match can not be reported accurately at this time. Abas won his silver medal in the 2004 Olympics at 55 kg/121 lbs. and was competing up a weight class at this tournament. Quintana was the Olympic gold medalist at 60 kg/132 lbs. at the Athens Games. With the victory in the semifinals, Abas will now face Youly Bonne Rodriguez of Cuba in the gold-medal finals later today. Abas won three matches to reach the finals. He opened with victories over Angel Forte Martinez and Maikel Perez Gonzales, both from Cuba. Qualifying for a bronze-medal matches were Michael Lightner (Norman, Okla./Dave Schultz WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Donny Pritzlaff (Oyster Bay, N.Y./New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. Under the new international rules, two bronze medals are awarded in each weight class. Lightner will face veteran Saeed Azerbaijani of Canada in the bronze-medal round. Lightner opened the tournament wil a loss to Youly Bonne Rodriguez of Cuba. Pritzlaff will face Ruslam Kokaev of Russia in his bronze medal match. Pritzlaff was beaten in his first match against Olympian Ivan Fundora of Cuba. Losing in the semifinal match at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. was Tommy Rowlands (Columbus, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs., where he was defeated by Haadzi-Murad Gozapov of Russia. Rowlands opened the tournament with two wins, stopping Miguel Batista of Cuba and Luis Vivenez of Venezuela. Rowlands has to win one repechage match in order to qualify for a bronze medal match. He will face Bandeep Sodhi of Canada in the wrestle-back round, and if he wins, will then wrestle in a bronze medal match. The other U.S. wrestler competing on Friday, Joe Heskett (Grover Beach, Calif,/Gator WC) was eliminated from medal contention at 74 kg/163 lbs. Heskett won his first match, but lost in the quarterfinals to former World champion Irbeg Farniev of Russia. When Farniev was upset in the semifinals by Canadian Danny Einhorn, Heskett was not eligible for the repechage matches. On the first day of competition on Feb. 24, the U.S. won three medals: Sammie Henson (St. Louis, Mo./Sunkist Kids) won a gold medal at 55 kg/121 lbs. Tolly Thompson (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) won a silver medal at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. and Jared Lawrence (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) won a bronze medal at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.
