Three U.S. coaches have received special permission to travel to Cuba for an international Silver Level Coaches Education Program with USA Wrestling in late February 2005. Two major international Olympic-caliber events will be held in Santi Spiritus, Cuba this year, the Granma Cup of Greco-Roman and the Cerro Pelado Cup of Freestyle. The coaches will attend these competitions, and work with the U.S. coaches and athletes who are on the tour. The coaches who will participate in this historic educational opportunity are Shane Tisdale of Illinois, Larry Holloway of Georgia and Aldo Mesa of Arizona. USA Wrestling needed special permission from our government for these coaches to participate in this tremendous experience. USA Wrestling National Coaches and Olympic champions Kevin Jackson (freestyle) and Steve Fraser (Greco-Roman) will be on this tour, in addition to top coaches Dan Russell, Chris Saba, Joe Seay and Dan Chaid. Among the star athletes on this tour will be Olympic silver medalists Sammie Henson and Stephen Abas in freestyle and Olympians Brad Vering and Oscar Wood in Greco-Roman. "We are excited to provide these coaches with the special opportunity to participate at this important international tournament," said Ted Witulski, USA Wrestling's NCEP Manager. "This is a nation that very few Americans have an opportunity to travel to and visit. Cuba is an outstanding wrestling nation, and its events and programs offer a tremendous learning environment for these coaches." There will be opportunities for the coaches to learn from the U.S. coaches and athletes, as well as from the international delegations at the event. They will also participate in a number of exciting cultural experiences as part of the tour. Updates from this special educational program will be provided on TheMat.com. USA Wrestling is also planning a similar educational opportunity for coaches to join Team USA and attend the 2005 World Wrestling Championships in Budapest, Hungary in late September.
