Colorado Springs, Colo. - Seven more Americans won their respective weight classes at the 2005 Dave Schultz Memorial International which concluded on Sunday afternoon. In the end, U.S. wrestlers captured titles in 15 of the 21 weight classes at the tournament. In men's freestyle action, Jared Lawrence (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler after defeated Olympian Sushil Kumar of India, 3-0, 9-3, at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Kumar also placed fourth at the 2003 World Championships. Matt Azevedo (San Luis Obispo, Calif./Sunkist Kids) narrowly missed pinning Kripa Shankar Patel of India in the 55 kg/121 lbs. final, but still came away with a 5-1, 2-1 win. In the first period, Azevedo was able to toss Patel to his back near the edge of the mat, but as Patel bridged, Azevedo tried to reset Patel's shoulders to the mat by lifting him and placing him back down, a move the mat official deemed illegal. Joe Williams (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids), fifth in the 2004 Olympic Games, won the 84 kg/185 lbs. weight class with a finals win over Andy Hrovat (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC), 4-0, 2-0. Williams scored when he needed to, using his patented power double-leg takedown for the majority of his points. At 120 kg/264.5 lbs., Tolly Thompson (Waterloo, Iowa/Sunkist Kids), posted three victories in winning a four-man weight class which was competed as a round-robin tournament. 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials runners-up Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Darryl Christian (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) won their respective weight classes in Greco-Roman competition. A pumped-up Warren defeated Nikolai Georgiev of Bulgaria in the finals at 60 kg/132 lbs., 3-0, 3-0. Warren had lost to Georgiev just one week ago at the Kit Carson International Cup. Christian, who was named the Greco-Roman tournament's Most Outstanding Wrestler, lasted through two lengthy video reviews to battle to a 3-0, 1-0, 5-2 win over Velin Marinov of Bulgaria. In the second period, after Christian had won the first period, the wrestlers went to the 30-second clinch to decide the period winner. In a close call, it was ruled that Christian stepped out of bounds before Marinov, sending the match to a third period. In the final stanza, Christian wore down Marinov, taking him to his back at one point, in earning the victory. Mohamed Abd El Fattah of Egypt, sixth in the 2004 Olympic Games, defeated Kaloyan Dinchev of Bulgaria, 3-0, 0-1, 1-1, in the finals at 84 kg/185 lbs. In women's freestyle action, 2003 World bronze medalist Sally Roberts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) downed 2004 Olympian Tela O'Donnell (Colorado Springs, Colo./Dave Schultz WC), 4-4, 4-6, 4-2, at 59 kg/130 lbs. Roberts and O'Donnell each traded numerous takedowns and exposures throughout the match, giving the crowd a satisfying offensive showdown. Two-time U.S. World Team Trials champion Katie Downing (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) defeated Heather Martin (Wellsville, Ohio/New York AC), 4-0, 1-1, at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. In the other women's freestyle finals match, Olympian Lyndsay Belisle of Canada defeated Eric Sharp of Canada, 0-1, 2-1, 1-1. It was the third gold medal for Canada in the women's freestyle division. The women's freestyle Most Outstanding Wrestlers was Ohenewa Akuffo of Canada, who won the 72 kg/158.5 lbs. weight class last night.
