First session of Dave Schultz Memorial International ends with few upsets

Colorado Springs, Colo. - The first set of weight classes began competing at the 2005 Dave Schultz Memorial International on Saturday morning.    The weight classes competed are 60 kg/132 lbs., 74 kg/163 lbs. and 96 kg/211.5 lbs. in men's freestyle, 55 kg/121 lbs., 66 kg/145.5 lbs., 84 kg/185 lbs. and 120 kg/264.5 lbs. in Greco-Roman and 48 kg/105.5 lbs., 55 kg/121 lbs., 63 kg/138.75 lbs. and 72 kg/158.5 lbs. in women's freestyle.    In men's freestyle action, Americans Michael Lightner (Norman, Okla./Dave Schultz WC) and Josh Moore (Kent, Ohio/Sunkist Kids) earned trips to the semifinals at 60 kg.    Lightner will face 2004 Olympian Yogeshwar Dutt of India. Moore will face Sait Prizreni of Albania, who upset Zach Roberson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) and Angel Cejudo (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids).    At 74 kg, former U.S. National Team member Donny Pritzlaff (Oyster Bay, N.Y./New York AC) and Tyrone Lewis (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) remain on a collision course for tonight's finals.     Lewis has dominated has competition, winning his first match 7-0, 5-2 over Jeff Adamson of Canada. He then pinned Som Bir of India in the second period in the quarterfinals.    2004 U.S. National Team member Mo Lawal (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) moved up in weight to 96 kg for this tournament. In his first match, he downed Matt Greenberg (Ithaca, N.Y./New York AC), 3-0, 2-0. Lawal will next face Nik Fekete (Blacksburg, Va./Sunkist Kids) in the semifinals.    Dawid Rechul (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) won two tough bouts in the bottom half of the 96 kg bracket to advance to the semifinals. Rechul defeated Josh Pearce (Colorado Springs, Colo./Unattached), 4-1, 3-1, in the first round and Zach Thompson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids), 1-0, 1-0 in the quarterfinals.    In Greco-Roman competition, Jeremiah Jarvis (Davis, Calif./Dave Schultz WC) has made a surprising run to the semifinals at 66 kg, defeating Noritomo Eto of Japan, 0-6, 5-3, 2-0, in the first round and Glenn Garrison (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), 2-0, 4-0 in the quarterfinals.    Jarvis will face Mike Ellsworth (Colorado Springs, Colo./Michigan WC) in the semifinals. Ellsworth scraped by Mark Rial (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC), 1-0, 0-3, 3-0, in the quarterfinals.    At the deepest Greco-Roman weight class, 84 kg, Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), Ethan Bosch (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Jacob Clark (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Marine Corps) all advanced to the semifinals.    Sieracki will face Tano Prochenski of Bulgaria in the semifinals. Bosch and Clark will face each other in the bottom half of the bracket.    2002 World champion Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) advanced to the semifinals at 120 kg after defeating Brandon Ruiz (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), 1-0, 1-0, in the quarterfinals.    He will face Petar Bogaevski of Bulgaria, who defeated Byers last weekend at the Kit Carson International Cup.    Russ Davie (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) will meet up with Khoren Papoyan of Armenia in the bottom half of the bracket.    At 55 kg, Americans Lindsey Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Joseph Betterman (Chicago, Ill./USOEC/New York AC) are in opposite semifinals.    In women's freestyle, two-time U.S. National Team member Mary Kelly (Mahomet, Ill./New York AC) was upset by Guadalupe Perez of Mexico, 0-6, 5-2, 5-0, at 48 kg. Perez will next face current U.S. National Team member Sara Fulp-Allen (El Granada, Calif./Menlo College) in the semifinals.    Two-time World silver medalist Tina George (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) advanced to the semifinals at 55 kg with two victories. She will meet up with Minerva Montero of Spain in the semifinals.    At 63 kg, 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials runner-up Alaina Berube (Escanaba, Mich./New York AC) pinned both of her opponents to advance to the semifinals where she will square off with 2001 World Cup silver medalist Tara Hedican of Canada.    Hedei Kulak of Canada upset Tori Adams (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), 1-0, 1-0, in the other half of the bracket to advance to the semifinals against World Cup silver medalist Helen Hennick of Canada.    Anita Schaetzle of Germany, sixth in the 2004 Olympics, will face Vanesa Jimenez of Spain in one of the 72 kg semifinals. In the other semifinal, Randi Miller (Arlington, Texas/Dave Schultz WC) will meet two-time World Cup silver medalist Ohenewa Akuffo of Canada).    The semifinals will begin at 3:00 p.m. (Mountain Time) and the finals will get underway at 5:30 p.m.
