Cleveland, Ohio - The state of Nebraska is sleeping a little easier tonight after Nebraska-Omaha and Nebraska-Kearney survived late scares in their quarterfinal duals at the Cliff Keen/NWCA Division II National Duals on the campus of Cleveland State Univ. on Friday evening. Omaha, the top seed in this year's National Duals and the defending NCAA team champions, will now seek revenge on Kearney, which downed Omaha in the National Duals finals last year, 24-14. The winner will face the winner of the other semifinal between Augustana (SD) and Central Oklahoma. Omaha relied on two-time NCAA Division II champion Les Sigman to provide a 7-2 win at heavyweight to break a tie with Minnesota State-Mankato in the team's 18-15 semifinal win. Mankato proved right off the opening whistle that they came to wrestle. Transfer Nick Smith, who came in at mid-semester from Northern Illinois, defeated top-ranked Dustin Tovar of Omaha 10-6 at 125 lbs. to get the Mavericks on the board. However, Omaha won four of the next five matches to take a 15-6 lead in what appeared to be a blowout in the making. Mankato then fired back, winning the next three matches, including a match that will have heavy implications on seeding at the NCAA Tournament this year as Mankato's Josh Koons downed Omaha's Nate Oviatt at 184 lbs., 7-0. With the dual tied at 15-15, though, Sigman stepped on the mat and advanced his team to the semifinal round. Kearney also survived a scare, coming out with a 19-13 win over Mercyhurst with a major decision victory by heavyweight Tervel Dlagnev to cap off the win. In the dual, Kearney won five of the first seven matches to take a commanding 15-6 lead with only three bouts remaining. One of those matches was between the fourth and fifth-ranked wrestlers in the nation at 165 lbs. Kearney's Zack Schafer came out on top of a thrilling 18-13 decision over Aaron Dalton. To keep Mercyhurst alive in the dual, though, 197-pound Justin Mautz, ranked eighth in the nation, had to upset top-ranked Jeff Sylvester of Kearney. And that's what he did. Mautz controlled the match, scoring two takedowns at the edge of the mat en route to a 7-5 victory. Central Oklahoma, the sixth seed, is the lowest seeded team in the semifinals. The Bronchos posted a dominating 27-9 victory over third-seeded Ashland in the semifinals. The Bronchos gained their first advantage of the dual meet when seventh-ranked Jared Henning downed sixth-ranked Zach Meissner of Ashland 6-2 at 133 lbs. to tie the dual score at 3-3. The next big break for Central Oklahoma came when fifth-ranked Gary Skoch of Ashland injury defaulted, giving the Bronchos six team points and a 15-3 lead in the dual meet. Second-ranked Kevin Lochner (197 lbs.) and fourth-ranked Josh Leadingfox (285) closed out the dual win for Central Oklahoma. The Bronchos will face second-seeded and second-ranked Augustana (SD), a team that recently downed top-ranked Division III Augsburg in a dual meet. Augustana defeated Pittsburgh-Johnstown 27-10. In the dual, Augustana's Andre Vanderelde defeated eighth-ranked Thad Benton 12-7 in what turned out to be one of five Augustana wins over ranked opponents. Perhaps the biggest win for Augustana was from 197-pound Tim Boldt, who defeated All-American Howard Bell 10-1. The semifinals of the 2005 Cliff Keen/NWCA Division II National Duals will begin at 9 a.m.
