Two U.S. rosters have been finalized for the inaugural Kit Carson International Cup to be held in Fort Carson, Colo., Jan. 28-29, 2005. This is a Greco-Roman dual meet tournament. Competing against the two U.S. squads will be teams from Belarus, Bulgaria and Uzbekistan. A fourth international team may still be added. The first U.S. team will be led by 2004 Olympians Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Brad Vering (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. Gruenwald was also an Olympian in 2000 and placed fourth at the 2003 World Championships. Vering placed fifth at the 2002 and 2003 World Championships. 2002 World champion Dremiel Byers (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) will compete at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Byers placed second at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Also competing for the first U.S. team will be 2004 Olympic Team Trials runners-up Darryl Christian (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Justin Ruiz (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Christian was a 2004 U.S. Nationals champion and placed third at the 2002-03 U.S. World Team Trials. Ruiz won silver medals at the 2003 World Cup and the 2003 Pan American Games. He also competed in the 2003 World Championships. Finalizing the first U.S. roster are Lindsey Durlacher (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Glenn Garrison (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. Both wrestlers placed fourth at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Durlacher is also a three-time U.S. Nationals runner-up. U.S. World Team members T.C. Dantzler (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Keith Sieracki (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) will lead the second U.S. team. Dantzler, a two-time U.S. World Team member, will compete at 74 kg/163 lbs. Sieracki, a 2001 U.S. World Team member, will compete at 84 kg/185 lbs. Joining Dantzler at 74 kg/163 lbs. will be Jess Hargrave (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), who placed fourth at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials runner-up Joe Warren (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at compete at 60 kg/132 lbs. He has also placed third at the U.S. Nationals twice. Three other 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials placewinners will compete: Harry Lester (Akron, Ohio/USOEC/Sunkist Kids) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Adam Wheeler (San Diego, Calif./Gator WC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and Russ Davie (Cleveland, Ohio/Cleveland WC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Lester placed sixth at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials, Wheeler placed fourth and Davie placed seventh. Wheeler will split matches at 96 kg with Al Sankey (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army), who placed third at the 2004 Armed Forces Championships. Joe Betterman (Chicago, Ill./USOEC/New York AC) and Neal Rodak (San Diego, Calif./U.S. Navy) will round out the second U.S. team's roster. Both will compete at 55 kg/121 lbs. At two recent tournaments, the Sunkist Kids International Open and the New York Athletic Club Christmas International, Betterman placed second and Rodak placed third. The team from Belarus will be led by 2004 Olympic bronze medalist and two-time Olympian Vyatcheslav Makarenko at 84 kg/185 lbs. Other Olympians in the Belarus lineup will be Vitali Zhuk (2000) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Alexander Kikinov (2004) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Andrei Chekovski (2004) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Bulgaria will have three 2004 Olympians in its lineup, led by three-time Olympian Sergej Mureiko at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Mureiko won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympic Games. He has also won three World medals. Also competing for Bulgaria are 2004 Olympians Vladislav Metodiev at 84 kg/185 lbs. and Kaloian Dinchev at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. 2004 Olympic gold medalist Alexander Dokturishivili will lead a strong Uzbekistan team into the Kit Carson International Cup. Dokturishivili, also a 2000 Olympian, will compete at 84 kg/185 lbs. 2001 World champion and 2000 Olympian Dilshod Aripov will compete at 60 kg/132 lbs. for Uzbekistan as well. Also competing for Uzbekistan are 2000 Olympian Ruslan Biktyakov at 74 kg/163 lbs. and 2004 Olympian Aleksey Cheglakov at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
