George Mason Univ. welcomes 13 recruits in 2000-2001

PATRIOT WRESTLING TO WELCOME 13 NEWCOMERS IN 2000-01    FAIRFAX, VA, Aug. 2, 2000 . A total of 13 newcomers will join the George Mason University wrestling program for the 2000-01 season, head coach Brian Shaffer has announced. Leading the way are three reigning state champions, two in Maryland and one from Virginia.    Tony Howard (Gaithersburg, MD) won three straight Maryland Class 3A/4A championships while at Magruder High School, claiming the 160-pound title while posting a 39-0 record as a senior. A two-time All-Metropolitan Washington selection with a career record of 105-1, Howard also placed fourth at the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) Senior Nationals.    Tim Lowe (Silver Spring, MD) won two Maryland titles, claiming the Class 1A/2A crown as a junior and the Class 3A/4A championship at 135 pounds with a 37-2 mark as a senior last season at Albert Einstein High School. Lowe also is a two-time All-Metropolitan Washington choice.    J.C. Cuffee (Chesapeake, VA) claimed the 152-pound championship at the Virginia Group AAA Championships last March.    Six other Patriot recruits placed in the top six at their respective state tournaments last season. They included Mark Anderson (Gaithersburg HS/Montgomery Village, MD), third in Maryland Class 3A/4A; Kia Kianersi (Fairfax HS/Fairfax, VA), third in Virginia Group AAA; Chris Tobin (Cary HS/Cary, NC), third in North Carolina Class 4A; Ed Tan (Salem HS/Virginia Beach, VA), fourth in Virginia Group AAA; Nick Webster (Towanda Area HS/Towanda, PA), fifth in Pennsylvania Class AA; and Sandy Ailor (Douglas Freeman/Richmond, VA), sixth in Virginia Group AAA.    The other George Mason newcomers include Ailor's twin brother Preston, Joe O'Brien (Garnet Valley HS/Boothwyn, PA), Gabe Oriade (Annandale HS/Annandale, VA) and Michael Strasburg (Yorktown HS/Arlington, VA). Preston Ailor (Central Region) and Strasburg (Northern Region) each won region titles and were Virginia Group AAA qualifiers, while O'Brien was a three-time Pennsylvania Class AA state qualifier. Oriade, who did not attend college last year, placed third in Virginia Group AAA as a senior in 1999.    George Mason finished the 1999-2000 season with a 6-4 overall record and a 3-1 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association. The Patriots placed second at the CAA Championships in March. Donnie DeFilippis was named the top Freshman All-American at 141 pounds and was the CAA "Rookie of the Year" after posting a 34-11 record and placing in the top 12 at the NCAA Championships.
