Johnston wins bronze medal at Vaanta Cup

Philip Johnston (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Air Force) captured a bronze medal at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. at the 2004 Vaanta Cup in Vaanta, Finland on Dec. 4.    Johnston won his first two matches, easily defeating Janne Kärhä of Finland (2-0, 6-0) and Pasi Pietilä of Finland (5-1, 5-2). In the semifinals, Johnston lost to eventual champion Denis Shakaja of Russia (0-7, 1-4).    Johnston won by default over Theodoros Tounousidis of Sweden in the bronze-medal match.    Also placing for the U.S. were Neal Rodak (San Diego, Calif./U.S. Navy), fourth at 55 kg/121 lbs., and Jeremy McLean (Quantico, Va./U.S. Marine Corps), sixth at 60 kg/132 lbs.    Rodak defeated Ville Kyllönen of Finland (4-0, 1-0) in his first match before dropping his next three matches to place fourth. Two of those losses were three-period matches.    McLean started off with two wins in his first two matches, defeating Mika Koskinen of Finland (0-1, 1-0, 3-0) and Matti Mikkilä of Finland (0-1, 1-0, 1-0).    The U.S. team placed fifth overall.
