This past October, Olympic Champion Brandon Slay led a group of high school wrestlers from around the United States to Bulgaria and Greece for an international wrestling exchange. Actually, only the first night was spent in Bulgaria. The team arrived in Sofia and rested the first night. The next day, after wrestling two matches against some tough Bulgarian squads, the team headed south by bus into Northern Greece. The American team wrestled seven matches, against Greek and Bulgarian teams, and participated in a number of training sessions. Coach Slay worked a lot of technique with the group during the tour. Most days also began with a morning run. Although the foreign teams won all seven matches, Slay's technique sessions seemed to pay off. As the tour progressed, every athlete showed steady improvements. The best individual performance came from Michael Cox of North Carolina, who went 6-1. What was unique about this tour was the cultural program. This tour presented a Biblical History. The group retraced the footsteps of the Apostle Paul on his second missionary journey. When the Apostle Paul first brought the Gospel to Europe, he landed in the port city of Neopolis, located in eastern Macedonia. Today that city is called Kavala and it is Greece's prettiest mainland port. That's where Slay's team began its Biblical journey. From Kavala, the group retraced Paul's journey to Philippi, Thessalonica, Berea, Athens and Corinth. Everyone was amazed as they walked amongst the ruins of the ancient Biblical cities of Philippi and Corinth. Coach Slay and Team Leader Wade Genova gave a Biblical overview of each city the team visited. In Philippi, one of the archeological sites included what was believed to be the prison where the Apostle Paul and Silas were put. There, the Bible tells of a miracle that occurred in the form of an earthquake that released the prisoners. The group also visited the Acropolis in Athens, with its awesome Parthenon. On the hike up to the Acropolis, the team climbed on top Mars Hill, where the Apostle Paul made his most famous speech. Brandon Slay read the speech to the group. Everyone in the group had a wonderful experience. They all expressed a desire to travel again soon. Coach Slay said he plans on keeping in touch with each of the boys. Because of the tour's success, World Sports Alliance has decided to run the tour again. World Sports Alliance, the "Official International Exchange Coordinator of USA Wrestling" and the organizer of this tour, has scheduled it for June of 2005.
