The NCAA has released its conference allocations for the 2005 NCAA Tournament, which will be held at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Mo., March 17-19. The NCAA allocates 330 spots to the 11 different NCAA Division I wrestling conferences. The Big 10 and Big XII conferences are at their limit. The Big 10 sends 72 wrestlers to the NCAA Tournament while the Big XII sends 36. No conference can gain or lose more than three spots in one year. Amazingly, for the fourth consecutive year, one conference gained three spots - the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA). The EIWA will send 42 wrestlers to this year's NCAA Tournament. In 1999, the EIWA was only able to send 29 wrestlers, showing the dramatic improvement in the level of competition in this conference. Last year, the EIWA had two NCAA champions and 12 All-Americans overall. The only other conference to gain qualifiers was the Mid-American Conference (MAC), which gained one spot. The MAC, which had two NCAA finalists last year, will send 19 wrestlers to this year's NCAA Tournament. Consequently, four conferences lost one allocated spot - Colonial Athletic Association (24), Eastern Wrestling League (36), Pacific-10 Conference (40) and West Regional (22). Below is a comparison of how each conference fared at the 2004 NCAA Tournament. Conference - NCAA champions/All-Americans/total number of qualifiers (All-American percentage) 1. Big XII - 3/23/36 (.638) 2. Big Ten - 3/26/72 (.361) 3. EIWA - 2/12/39 (.308) 4. MAC - 0/5/18 (.278) 5. ACC - 0/2/15 (.133) 6. PAC-10 - 1/5/41 (.122) 7. West Region - 0/2/23 (.087) 8. EWL - 1/3/37 (.081) 9. CAA - 0/2/25 (.080) 10. East Region - 0/0/11 (.000) 11. Southern Conference - 0/0/13 (.000) To view the 2005 NCAA allocations per conference, click here.
