USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender is seeking any and all input from our nation's college wrestling coaches for suggestions on how to change NCAA rules to help improve and strengthen college wrestling. Bender is a member of the Joint NCAA/USOC Task Force to review the decline of Olympic sports sponsorship on the collegiate level. This historic joint venture is exploring ways to positively effect change by offering recommendations and solutions to curb the Olympic sports sponsorship regresssion. He is one of 16 individuals assigned to work on the Task Force, who were selected by either the NCAA or the U.S. Olympic Committee. Bender's selection was made by the USOC. The Task Force is chaired by Jack Swarbrick, a partner in the Indianapolis law firm Baker and Daniels. The Task Force has begun its work, and Bender is planning to present any and all recommendations to this group that will help wrestling on the college level. Bender is seeking suggestions on how to change existing legislation or introduce new legislation which will benefit wrestling specifically, as well as all Olympic sports programs on the college level. The process of review has already begun. Bender has had meetings with a number of prominent college coaches, both informally and on an organized conference call, to identify a number of initiatives that he might pursue. In addition, the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Board of Directors, during its meetings in Philadelphia in September, made a number of suggestions to USA Wrestling on changes that would benefit college wrestling. USA Wrestling is looking for feedback from the entire college wrestling community on this project. This can include college wrestling coaches, as well as college administrators who have an interest in strengthening college wrestling. These suggestions can come from any level of NCAA wrestling, including Div. I, Div. II and Div. III. In addition to Bender's service on this Joint NCAA/USOC Task Force, USA Wrestling also has an active and direct dialogue with the NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee. Those seeking input in the process should contact Bender or USA Wrestling Director of Communications and Special Projects Gary Abbott right away.
