FILA, the international wrestling federation, has named Rick Tucci of Pembroke Pines, Fla. as one of a new group of instructors for international wrestling referees. As part of the changes instituted in international wrestling at the 2004 FILA Congress, there has been a total modification in the system of training, election and work for international wrestling referees. Within this new framework, the FILA Bureau has named a group of seven instructors for international referees, a group in which Tucci was elected to serve. Tucci has also been assigned to the FILA Officiating Department, a 10-member group which is led by its president, Mr. Mario Saletnig of Naples, Fla. "I am quite particularly delighted at the election in this post of your countryman, Mr. Tucci, which comes to reward a big career completely dedicated to the cause of wrestling and refereeing," said FILA President Raphael Martinetti. Others selected by FILA as instructors for referees are Ender Buyukersen (Turkey), Kamel Bouazis (Tunisia), Kim Ik Jong (Korea), Mehdi Khaledi (Iran), Oreste Molina (Cuba) and Marianne Nobs (Switzerland). Their term will be for the period 2004-2006. All seven instructors are also in the FILA Officiating Department, along with Saletnig, plus vice president Adel Moustafa of Egypt and secretary Aldo Albanese of Italy. "FILA has eliminated many older officials and put together a fair, impartial knowledgable group that I'll be working with," said Tucci. "There is a lot of responsibility that goes with this appointment." "I am looking forward to it. It is a neat honor," said Tucci. "You work the Olympic Games and you feel well respected around the world. This adds to that experience. I am representing my country and representing wrestling, which I love. I will do everything I can to impartially work in the best interest of wrestling." Tucci is considered one of the greatest wrestling referees in the world. He has received assignments for six Olympic Games, and has worked at five Olympic Games. Tucci worked the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, the 1988 Seoul Olympics, the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, the 2000 Sydney Olympics and the 2004 Athens Olympics. He was selected to work the 1980 Moscow Olympics but did not participate due to the U.S. boycott. He won the FILA Gold Whistle as the top referee working the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul, South Korea. Tucci has served 16 years as the President of the U.S. Wrestling Officials Association (USWOA), the world's largest wrestling officials association. He has also been an active leader within USA Wrestling, serving on the Board of Directors. He was inducted as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, Okla. in 2001. Tucci also received the Lifetime Achievement of Officials award by the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 1994. He received USA Wrestling's Official of the Year award in 1992, and was also named USA Wrestling's Man of the Year in 1997.
