CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Orange Crush Mat Club will begin practices for its 2004-05 wrestling season in early November. The club, for wrestlers age 7 and over, stresses "fun and fundamentals" with opportunities for wrestlers to learn and compete in three styles: Folkstyle, Freestyle and Greco-Roman. Oregon State assistant coach Jeff Cardwell serves as the club's director, with coaching by Chris Owens and Jimmy Smith and other local high school and collegiate coaches. Every effort is made to maintain a positive, safe, structured environment to improve skills, build confidence and provide competition appropriate for the age, size and skill level of all participants. The club will hold a "conditioning week" on Nov. 2 and Nov. 4 from 6 p.m.-7 p.m. in the Dale Thomas Wrestling Room at Langton Hall on the OSU campus. After that, the weekly schedule will include practices on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 6 p.m.-7:15 p.m. The Folkstyle (high school/collegiate style) season runs through early February, with the Freestyle/Greco-Roman season continuing through mid-April. The Orange Crush will wrestle dual meets on Wednesdays and tournaments on Saturdays. The cost is $100 for the Folkstyle season and $60 for the Freestyle/Greco-Roman season. The cost includes a USA Wrestling membership card and T-shirt; tournament fees, other competition costs and personal health coverage are not included. Scholarships or other arrangements can be made for individuals who demonstrate the need for assistance. New members can register by attending any practice, filling out a registration form, having it signed by a parent or guardian, and paying the appropriate fee.
