I. SELECTION SYSTEM A. Provide the minimum eligibility requirements for an athlete to be considered for nomination to the Team: 1. Citizenship: Must be a United States Citizen. 2. Minimum IF standards for participation (if any): n/a 3. FISU Regulations (if any): Only the following may participate as competitors in the Universiade:
Students who are officially registered for and pursuing a full-time course of study at a university or similar institute whose status as a university is recognized by the appropriate national academic authority of their country. Former students of the institutions mentioned above who have obtained their academic degree or diploma in the year preceding the event. All competitors must satisfy the following conditions: Be a national of the country they represent Be at least 17 and less than 28 years of age on January 1st in the year of the event. B. Provide a brief summary outlining how an athlete is selected as a nominee to the Team. Team will consist of 7 athletes in each style: men's and women's freestyle and Greco-Roman, for a total of 21 athletes.
Women: The highest place finisher per weight class (7 weight classes) from the Senior World Team Trials, beginning June 17-19, 2005, other than the Team Trials champion, that meets the FISU requirements. The Champion of the Senior World Team Trials will be the representative to the World Championships to be held in Budapest Hungary.
Men's Freestyle & Greco-Roman: The athlete representatives to the 2005 Men's Freestyle and Greco-Roman World University Games Teams will be selected based upon a team trials process to be held in Colorado Springs, Colorado, May 23-29, 2005. A one day Challenge Tournament will be held, with the winner of each weight class in the Challenge Tournament competing against the highest place finisher (who meets the requirements as stated in Section I. A.) from the University National Championship that is present and participating in the trials held in Colorado Springs. This will consist of a best of three format to be competed the day after the challenge tournament.
C. Tryout Events: 1. Provide the event names, dates and location of all trials, events and/or camps to be used as part of the selection process.
Women: World Team Trials, June 17-19 2005, Ames, IA
Men's Freestyle & Greco-Roman: World University Team Selection Trials Camp, May 23-29, 2005, Colorado Springs, CO 2. Provide event names, dates, locations and description of how athletes qualify for any "preliminary or qualifying" events or procedures that are prerequisites to attend any of the events listed above in C. 1 (if any).
Women: Top 7 in each weight class from Sr. U.S. Nationals, April 28-30, 2005 Las Vegas, NV Champion per weight class from the following North American FILA Scheduled events:
Sunkist, Oct 28-30 2004, Phoenix, AZ Clansman, Nov 12-14, 2004, Canada New York Athletic Club Tournament, Dec. 17-19, 2004, New York, NY Dave Schultz Memorial, Feb. 4-6, 2005, Colo Springs, CO Champion of Rocky Mountain Regional, March 24, 2005, Laramie, WY Champion of Northern Plains Regional May 13-15, 2005, Waterloo, IA Past World/Olympic Team Members that meet the FISU requirements Top 3 finish in an International Tour, approved by USAW National Coach, in Europe, Asia, or Cuba within two years of Trials -- Senior level only. Men's Freestyle & Greco-Roman: NJCAA Nationals, February 25-26, 2005, Rochester, MN: Finalists each weight NCAA Division III Nationals, March 4-5, 2005, Northfield, MN: Finalists each weight NAIA Nationals, March 4-5, 2005, Sioux City, IA: Finalists each weight NCAA Division II Nationals, March 11-12, 2005, Omaha, NE: Finalists each weight NCAA Division I Nationals, March 17-19, 2005, St. Louis, MO: Top 8 each weight USAW University National Championship, April 13-16, 2005, Chicago, IL: Top 8 each weight USAW Senior Nationals, April 29-30, 2005, Las Vegas, NV: Top 8 each weight Athletes meeting the above criteria must also meet the criteria established in Section I.A. of this document. 3. Provide the event name, dates and locations of additional trials that will be used to determine "start positions" (if any). None.
D. Provide a comprehensive, step-by-step description of the method that explains how athletes will go through the selection process to become team nominees.
Women: All athletes will have to qualify through the above listed requirements in order to participate in the World Team Trials. The WUG team will be determined by the individuals' final placing at the Trials. The highest place winner per weight class from the Trials, other than the Team Trials Champion, that meets the FISU requirements, will be the representative to the Team.
Men's Freestyle & Greco Roman: All athletes will have to qualify through the above listed requirements in order to participate in the World University Team Selection Competition/Camp. The selection process as stated in Section I, B of this document will determine the Team.
E. Provide the names of all committees/groups who oversee the selection process, including the name(s) and role(s) of their members.
See attachment A II. DISCRETIONARY SELECTION A. Provide rationale for utilizing discretionary selection (if any): In the unlikely event that the athlete representative cannot be determined through the top 6 place finishers at the Team Trials (see IV., A), the appropriate style Sport Committee will meet and name the weight class representative.
B. Describe the criteria to be used: Sport Committee will select athletes based on past year's USA Wrestling and NCAA competition results, for athletes that meet eligibility requirements as stated in Section I.A.
C. Explain how the criteria will be used: See above
D. Selection Committee
1. Provide the name of the committee(s) that will be responsible for discretionary selection. Appropriate Sport Committee - Men's Freestyle, Greco-Roman, Women's Freestyle
2. Provide a complete list of the members of the committee(s), their titles or NGB role that qualifies them to serve in this capacity. See Attachment A.
III. REMOVAL OF ATHLETES A. An athlete who is to be nominated to the Team by USA Wrestling may be removed from the Nominations for any of the following reasons, as determined by USA Wrestling:
Voluntary withdrawal. Athlete must submit a written letter to USA Wrestling's CEO/Executive Director. Injury or illness as certified by USA Wrestling's physician (or medical staff). An athlete who may be removed from the Team pursuant to this provision has the right to a hearing per USA Wrestling's Constitution and Bylaws (Article XI, XII, XIII) or USOC Bylaws, Article 9.
B. A USOC approved team member is subject to the USOC Code of Conduct and Grievance Procedures.
C. An athlete may be removed from Nomination or from the Team at any time for violation of FISU, WADA, FILA, USADA and/or USOC anti-doping protocol, policies and procedures. In such instances, the adjudication process will be managed through the United States Anti-Doping Agency.
IV. REPLACEMENT OF ATHLETES A. Describe the process by which the replacement pool of athletes will be identified:
For all three disciplines: If the World University Games selected athlete vacates the number one position, the next highest ranked athlete in the respective style and weight class will be the replacement. This will continue through the 6th place finisher at the qualifying trials. In the unlikely event the athlete representative cannot be determined through 6th place, the appropriate style Sport Committee will name a representative at th
