California USA Wrestling, the state association in California, has announced one of its major award winners. The Appreciation Award is given to an individual or group who is instrumental in the support of wrestling at all levels. This year ,California USA Wrestling Inc, and its Board Of Directorswould like to recognize Mr. Brian Quinn, Athletic Director at Cal State Fullerton. Mr Quinn will presented with the award by California USA Wrestling Inc. board members at this year's High School Team Day on Nov 19, 2004. Mr. Brian Quinn assumed the post of director of athletics at Cal State Fullerton on Jan.14, 2002.Under his leadership, the Titans are successfully weathering a state and systemwide fiscal crisis with minimal impact on student-athletes. Academic performances haveimproved dramatically and Titan Gym has undergone a dramatic facelift. In each of thelast two years, the Titans have outperformed the rest of the Big West Conference in theNACDA Cup standings capped by consecutive appearances by the baseball team at the College World Series, where the Titans placed third for the fourth time and then wontheir fourth national title. The last two years, the popular decision would have been to cut wrestling and gymnastics to solve budget issues. Brian, from the start, has said he didn't come here to cut sports but to make things better. He has stood up for wrestling in a big way and helped us survive. Without Brian Quinn's support, Cal State Fullerton wrestling would have been added to the 80 other college programs in California that have been cut since the late 1970's. Mr. Quinn graduated from Loyola in 1963 with a degree in business. He was a starter for the Lions in both baseball and basketball and was captain and mostvaluable player of the latter for the 1962-63 season. He was inducted into the LMU Athletics Hall of Fame as both a player and administrator. Mr. Quinn was Assistant Dean and Athletic Director at Loyola Mary Mount University from 1985 through 1998. During his tenure the Lions won nine West Coast Conference Titles and advanced to the NCAA mens basketball tournament three times. Both the baseball team and the women's volleyball team made five trips to the NCAA Playoffs with the baseball team reaching the College World Series in 1986. Among his accomplishments away from competition were bringing the department into full Title IX compliance and earning a 10-year NCAA accreditation without conditions in 1997. In June of 1998, Mr. Quinn was appointed Executive Director of athletic development and promotion. He was responsible for major gift solicitation to build new recreation and health facilities, new athletic offices and auxiliary services as well as improved playing facilities. Brian and his wife, Colette, live in Manhattan Beach. They have four adultchildren: Andrew, who lives in Atlanta; Janet, who lives in Rye, New York; anddaughters Suzanne and Maureen.
