High school star Brent Metcalf of Davison, Mich. has given a verbal commitment to Virginia Tech where he plans to study Engineering. While at Virginia Tech, Metcalf is expected to train with new head coach Tom Brands, a 1996 Olympic gold medalist and 2004 Olympic freestyle coach, and assistant coach Doug Schwab, a 1999 NCAA champion. "I walked into the room and watched the guys work out. You've got Brands and Schwab and (Lee Fullhart) and it was just awesome to see," Metcalf said of his recruiting visit last weekend. "The school was great. I felt good with everything. I liked the guys a lot. Right when I walked in I felt comfortable." Metcalf is considered by many as the top high school recruit in the nation. He is currently 168-0 in his three-year career at Davison High School, winning three state titles during that period. He was named as a member of the 2004 ASICS Tiger High School All-American First Team at 145 lbs. Metcalf has also been stellar in freestyle and Greco-Roman competition. He won USA Wrestling Junior freestyle and Greco-Roman national titles in 2003 and 2004. He was also a FILA Junior freestyle and Greco-Roman national champion in 2004. "I want to thank all of the schools that took the time to contact me and host me on recruiting visits," stated Metcalf, whose older brother Chase is a student-athlete at the University of Michigan, a school that also recruited Brent. "The University of Michigan was great, and I wish them all the success in the world. I felt that Virginia Tech was a better fit for me at this point in my career, but I will also keep an eye on the Wolverines with my brother in the starting lineup this year," Metcalf added. Chase is expected to start at 133 lbs. this season for Michigan. Brent is a member of the National Honor Society and he was recently nominated for the Wendy's Heisman Trophy, which is awarded to the top high school student-athlete in the nation. Jay Borschel (Marion, Iowa), Daniel LeClere (North Linn, Iowa) and Joey Slaton (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) have also given verbal commitments to Virginia Tech.
