U.S. Olympic Internet Network ranked as top gaining internet property

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The U.S. Olympic Internet Network, a collaborative effort between the U.S. Olympic Committee and U.S. National Governing Bodies, ranked No. 1 in the comScore Media Metrix* rankings of the "top gaining Internet property" in August. Led by the site's most popular athletes in August - swimmer Michael Phelps (Towson, Md.) and gymnast Carly Patterson (Allen, Texas) -- usolympicteam.com had nearly two million unique visitors in August, which is more traffic than the last four Olympic Games combined, while all the sites in the Network had more than three million unique visitors. TheMat.com, the official web page of USA Wrestling, is a key member of the U.S. Olympic Internet Network and one of the most popular sports web pages within the Olympic family. Other usolympicteam.com highlights: * For the first time, nearly 200,000 fans logged on to usolympicteam.com wirelessly using their AT&T Wireless service. * Phelps, winner of eight Olympic medals (six gold and two bronze) had the most popular bio with more than 90,000 page views. The top five athletes also included: o Carly Patterson, Gymnastics o Amanda Beard (Irvine, Calif.), Swimming o Paul Hamm (Waukesha, Wis.), Gymnastics o Misty May (Newport Beach, Calif.), Beach Volleyball * Gymnastics, whose teams won a combined nine medals, including gold in both the women's (Patterson) and men's (Hamm) all-around and the silver in women's and men's team competition, was the most popular sport followed by Swimming, Volleyball (Indoor & Beach), Basketball and Softball. * Usocpressbox.org - a site targeting the world's media - drew 140,000 unique visitors during August and nearly one-half million page views. * For the first time, fans could personalize usolympicteam.com to feature the latest news on their favorite sports and could sign up for the U.S. Olympic Fan Club. * U.S. Olympic Team auctions on eBay raised $10,000 to benefit the USOC's Finding Leaders Among Minorities Everywhere (FLAME) program. "We are thrilled with the millions of fans who followed the tremendous success of the 2004 U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams through the U.S. Olympic Internet Network," said Keith Allo, Chief of USOC Entertainment Properties. With the addition of features such as personalizing the content to your favorite sport, we will maintain this momentum long after the Games have ended." While the U.S. Olympic Internet Network topped the list in August, usolympicteam.com continued its strong traffic showing with more than 300,000 unique visitors in September during the 2004 Paralympic Games, the largest non-Games month in site history. *The rankings were based on the top percentage change - 1,100 percent - in unique visitors from July 2004 to August 2004.
