King College, an NAIA institution located in Bristol, Tenn., announced that it has added a varsity wrestling program for the 2005-06 season, according to athletic director Brad Horstmann. "We are tremendously excited about the expansion of our athletic program. We want to offer a comprehensive program and the addition of wrestling will help us do that," said Horstmann. King College has already initiated a national search for a wrestling coach, and is seeking additional qualified applicants at this time. Horstmann would like to fill the position soon, in order for the new coach to begin the recruiting process. You can see the job posting on TheMat.com at the following link: http://www.themat.com/articles/showquestion.asp?faq=16&fldAuto=990 King College has 812 students, and recently opened a new student center. Wrestling is one of seven new sports added to King College in the past two years. "We are trying to grow as an institution and have looked at several options for adding sports. I am convinced that wrestling will be a great thing for us. High school wrestling is very popular in our area, so we believe that we will have a high level of interest as there are very few collegiate wrestling programs in close proximity to us," said Horstmann. King is in the Appalachian Athletic Conference, and this will be the first wrestling program in this league. "We hope that when we have success other institutions in the Appalachian Athletic Conference will follow our lead and add this outstanding competitive sport," said Horstmann. "We are not interested in just having a wrestling program, but rather we want to try and compete at the highest possible level in the NAIA." Horstmann understands wrestling, having spent some time in his career in the state of Iowa. He has an appreciation for the passion that wrestling people have for their sport, as well as for the need for more college opportunities. "People in the wrestling community have been very helpful to us as we have went through this process. Dan Gable and Mike Duroe at Iowa have provided great insight to what we are trying to accomplish," said Horstmann. The size of the NAIA Tourmament continues to grow, and the quality of the competition is also improving. Institutions such as King College have recognized that there are many potential student-athletes across the nation and in their region that participate in wrestling, and that it makes great sense to add the sport at their university.
