Ronald Hughes (Hollister, Calif.) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for the week of September 21-27. Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday. Hughes won a gold medal in Division B (41-45 years old) at 63 kg/138.5 lbs. at the 2004 Veterans Greco-Roman World Championships in Seinajoki, Finland. Hughes was in a four-man pool, the only four men in the tournament at his weight class. He won his first two matches, defeating Rafik Khamidullin of Russia, 5-4, and Gombar Dezso of Hungary, 2-0. In his final match, Hughes lost a heart-breaking 7-7 referee's decision to Dmitry Zangirov of Russia. However, Hughes was able to win a gold medal after tallying enough classification points. The Veterans division is for athletes who are 35 years old and above, and is broken into five age divisions. Click here to view previous Athletes of the Week Photo by George Dunn
