Robert "Bob" Kranz of Long Beach, Miss. has been named USA Wrestling's State Chairperson in Mississippi. Kranz has been active in wrestling for much of his life, and is excited about the opportunity to help build the sport in his state. "Mississippi needs an active USA Wrestling program and that is my goal," said Kranz. Kranz first learned about wrestling as a youth in Mississippi, when he was exposed to the sport at wrestling clinics held alongside semi-professional wrestling shows in his community. There were no organized youth wrestling activities for Kranz to join. As a member of the high school football team, Kranz often wrestled with teammates for fun and training. While serving in the Air Force, Kranz was involved with the local pro wrestling promoter in Albuquerque, N.M. His involvement in amateur wrestling began as a parent in Washington state in the 1970's, when his sons Ward and Neal joined a local wrestling program. Kranz assisted the program with fundraising activities and other administrative support. Both sons competed in wrestling in junior high school and high school. His son Neal competed on the club level through college, and continued in the sport when he moved to Guam. Neal Kranz was a member of the Guam wrestling team at the 1995 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships and the 1996 Olympic Games, both held in Atlanta, Ga. He now heads up the Guam Wrestling Federation and represents the Oceanic nations within the international wrestling federation FILA. Bob Kranz started a successful USA Wrestling club in Key West, Fla. in the mid 1990's. Due to his efforts, the local high school added wrestling as a sport, and became competitive. A USA Wrestling NCEP Bronze clinic was held in Key West, and Kranz attended the clinic as a coach. Kranz moved back the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where he spent his childhood, in early 2003, and has made a commitment to work on the development of USA Wrestling programs in his state.
