Cole, Anderson win medals at the 2004 Veterans Greco-Roman World Championships

Ron Cole (Federal Way, Wash.) and Bob Anderson (Chula Vista, Calif.) have each won medals at the 2004 Veterans Greco-Roman World Championships in Seinajoki, Finland. Cole captured a bronze medal at 97 kg in Division D (51-55 years old). In the bronze-medal bout, Cole defeated Vladimir Botchkarev of Russia, 1-0. Anderson won a silver medal at 97 kg in Division E (56 + years old). After winning his first three matches by a combined score of 11-0 with one fall, Anderson was defeated in the gold-medal match by Josip Corak of Croatia, 5-1. Placing fourth in Saturday's competition were Wayne Purtell (Bay City, Mich.) at 97 kg in Division A (35-40 years old) and Donald Apodaca (Huntington Beach, Calif.) at 85 kg in Division E. Purtell lost 3-0 to Andreas Kosing of Germany in the bronze-medal match. Apodaca lost 9-1 to Boris Belyayev of Ukraine in his bronze-medal match. Ronald Hughes (Hollister, Calif.) finished Saturday's competition undefeated with two pool wins at 63 kg in Division B (41-45 years old), winning 5-4 over Rafik Khamidullin of Russia and 2-0 over Gombar Dezso of Hungary. He will face Dmitry Zangirov of Russia in his final pool match tomorrow morning. At 69 kg in Division B, William Wilkes (Parrish, Fla.) is one win away from the bronze-medal match. He must defeat A. Ryzhenkov of Ukraine in the morning to advance to the medal round.
