2004 Olympic gold medalist Cael Sanderson of Ames, Iowa will be honored by Wasatch High School with a day full of festivities on Friday, September 24. Sanderson will first speak at a high school assembly at Wasatch High School, where he won four state titles and compiled a record of 127-3. The assembly will begin at 8 a.m. (Mountain Standard Time). Next, Sanderson will meet the First Presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ for Latter Day Saints, Gordon B. Hinkley. This is an honor for someone in the Mormon religion. It is compared to a Catholic meeting the Pope. Sanderson will then ride in the Wasatch High School homecoming parade before being inducted into the Wasatch High School Hall of Fame at halftime of the school's homecoming football game. "The people of Heber City and Salt Lake City have helped put together a day that should be very exciting. When I was at Wasatch, I never would have thought this stuff would be happening to me. But it is, and it's pretty cool," Sanderson said. Sanderson won an Olympic gold medal in men's freestyle wrestling at 84 kg/185 lbs. In 2003, he won a World silver medal. As a collegian at Iowa State Univ., Sanderson became the first wrestler ever to finish his career undefeated (159-0) and with four NCAA titles. He accomplishment was named the No. 2 college achievement of the century by Sports Illustrated. For more information on Sanderson's day, you may contact Intrepid Public Relations at (801) 481-9482.
