Ron Cole (Federal Way, Wash.) has advanced out of his pool at 97 kg in Division D (51-55 years old) at the 2004 Veterans Greco-Roman World Championships in Seinajoki, Finland. Cole defeated Nikolay Botchkarev of Russia by fall and Peter Hallander of Sweden 4-0 to move on to the next round. Also advancing is Wayne Purtell (Bay City, Mich.) at 97 kg in Division A (35-40 years old). Purtell will enter a repechage after posting a 1-1 record in his pool. Purtell lost his first match 5-1 to Yuri Seukhikh of Russia before winning his second match 2-0 over Juha Jokinen of Finland. Bob Anderson (Chula Vista, Calif.) is the only other American still undefeated after the first day with two wins in pool competition. He defeated Anatoly Pozdnyakov of Russia 3-0 and Mohammad Hassankhar Iran by fall. Anderson must next face Vladimir Evtodeev of Russia in his final pool match. If Anderson wins that match, he will advance into the gold-medal match. Pool pairings have also been released for Divisions B (41-45 years old) and C (46-50 years old). Those pairings for the U.S. competitors are listed below. Competition for Divisions B and C will begin on Friday, September 24.
