Three U.S. wrestlers won their semifinal matches and advanced into the gold-medal finals of men's freestyle wrestling at the Ano Liossia Olympic Hall in Athens, Greece, Saturday, August 28. Advancing into the gold-medal matches are Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif. /Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Jamill Kelly (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Cael Sanderson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs. The gold-medal finals will be during the 5:30 p.m. session of wrestling on Saturday, August 28. Abas defeated Chikara Tanabe of Japan in the semifinals, 3-0. He controlled the entire match, scoring a takedown in the first period, and two takedowns in the second period, each worth one point. In this match, Abas was cool, controlled and poised. Abas will face Russia's Mavlet Batirov in the gold-medal finals on Saturday evening. Abas scored a win over Batirov at the 2003 World Championships. Kelly scored an exciting and controversal 3-1 overtime win over 2004 European champion Makhach Murtazaliev of Russia in the semifinals. There was no score in the first period. In the clinch to start the second period, Murtazaliev attempted a headlock which Kelly countered, and Murtazaliev released his lock, giving Kelly the point. Regulation ended at 1-0, and the required three points were not scored, forcing the match into overtime. There was another clinch in overtime. This time Murtazaliev forced Kelly to step out of bounds, which gave Murtazaliev one point and tied the match at 1-1. At the 7:31 mark, there was a scramble on the edge of the mat, and Kelly came out on the top at the end. Officials went to the videotape and initially awarded the two points to Murtazaliev, which would have given his the victory. Kelly and the U.S. coaches appealed to the international federation officials to review the action once again. This time, officials awarded Kelly two points on the exchange, giving him the 3-1 victory. The American coaches and fans celebrated as Kelly left the mat with joy. Murtazaliev defeated Kelly 3-0 earlier this season when they met at the Yarygin Tournament in Russia. Kelly will face three-time World champion Elbrus Tedeev of Ukraine in the gold-medal finals. Sanderson defeated 1999 World Champion and 2000 Olympic silver medalist Yoel Romero of Cuba, 3-2 in his semifinal bout. Romero scored first on an ankle pick takedown at 1:16 for a 1-0 lead. Sanderson answered with a low single takedown at the 2:49 mark and tied the bout at 1-1. In the second period, Sanderson used his signature low single leg attacks to score takedowns at 3:47 and 4:24, taking a 3-1 lead and scoring the necessary three points to win. The only other point came when Sanderson was cautioned for fleeing the hold with just four seconds left, giving Romero a second point. In his bout, Sanderson was patient and predatory. Romero and Sanderson have met previously in the 2003 Pan American Games and the 2003 Titan Games, with Romero winning those bouts, by 3-2 overtime margins. Sanderson will face 2000 Olympic silver medalist Moon Eui Jae of Korea in the finals. Moon dominated 2003 World champion Sajid Sajidov of Russia in the semifinals. Sajidov was the athlete who beat Cael Sanderson in the 2003 World finals match. Three U.S. wrestlers started their competition during the morning session, with the USA winning two of the bouts Joe Williams (Iowa City, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 74 kg/163 lbs. started the morning with a 6-1 win over Gela Saghirashvili of Georgia. Williams came out on fire, scoring a single leg takedown just 12 seconds into the match. A double leg takedown, followed by a gut wrench, extended his lead to 4-0 midway through the period. Williams made it 5-0 on a spin behind takedown. Saghirashvili scored his lone point on a takedown on the buzzer, making it 5-1 at the break. Williams closed the scoring with a low single takedown in the second period. Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) opened with an impressive 9-0 win over Radovan Valach of Austria at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. Cormier got his offense rolling in the first period, scoring two takedowns and a pair of two-point gut wrench turns for a 6-0 lead at the break. He added three more takedowns in the second period to put the match away at 9-0. Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla/Gator WC) lost his opening match at 60 kg/132 lbs. to two-time World silver medalist Purevbaator Oyunbileg of Mongolia, 3-1 in overtime at 7:50. Oyunbileg scored first, when Guerrero was nailed with a fleeing the mat call at 1:03 for a caution and one-point penalty. There were no other points scored during regulation with the match at 1-0. A wrestler must score at least three points to win, so the bout went into overtime. From the clinch, Guerrero attempted to score but could not complete the move, giving Oyunbileg his second point. Guerrero scored a takedown at 7:15 to close the gap to 2-1. However, at the 7:50 mark, Guerero attempted a shot, and Oyunbileg scored a counter takedown for the 3-1 win. The U.S. had a 4-1 mark for the session. For the entire freestyle tournament so far, the United States has an impressive 14-2 record.
