Abas, Kelly, Sanderson qualify for semifinals at Olympic freestyle wrestling competition

Three U.S. wrestlers advanced to the semifinal round of men's freestyle wrestling with victories in the evening session at the Ano Liossia Olympic Hall in Athens, Greece, Friday, August 27.    Advancing into the semifinal rounds are Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif. /Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Jamill Kelly  (Stillwater, Okla./Gator WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Cael Sanderson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 84 kg/185 lbs.    In his first bout of the evening, Abas faced 2002 World champion Rene Montero of Cuba at 55 kg/121 lbs. and earned an electrifying 4-3 come-from behind win to claim his pool.    Abas fell behind early, when Montero scored a first-period exposure for a 2-0 lead. Montero padded his lead to 3-0 on a takedown early in the second period. Abas began his comeback with a takedown at the 4:01 mark for a 3-1 score. He closed the gap to 3-2 with a takedown with just 30 seconds to go. With just 18 seconds left in the match, Abas turned Montero with a two-point gutwrench for the stunning 4-3 win.    Abas moved into the quarterfinals against Li Zhengyu of China, and earned a 6-1 victory. The first period was scoreless until the final few seconds, when Abas scored a takedown and a quick high gut wrench turn for three points and a 3-0 lead at the break. Just 24 seconds into the second period, Abas hit a three-point takedown with exposure to extend his lead to 6-0. Zhengyu was able to score a one-point reversal later in the match, but Abas shut down his attack to seal the 6-1 win.    Abas will face Chikara Tanabe of Japan in the semifinals on Saturday morning during the 9:30 a.m. session.    Kelly won his pool competition at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and advanced directly to the semifinals after beating Elman Asgarov of Azerbaijan, 3-2 in overtime at 6:23.    Kelly scored first on a takedown on the edge just 33 seconds into the meet. Asgarov tied the match at 1-1 with a takedown late in the first period. Kelly made the score 2-1 with a low single leg takedown early in the second period. Asgarov tied the score at 2-2 with a counter attack takedown with just 20 seconds left. The athletes went to the clinch in overtime, and Asgarov released his lock first, giving Kelly one point and the victory.    Kelly will face 2004 European champion Makhach Murtazaliev of Russia in the semifinals on Saturday morning during the 9:30 a.m. session.    Sanderson, a 2003 World silver medalist, opened the evening with his final pool match, defeating Serhei Borchanko of Ukraine, 9-1.    Sanderson quickly scored a double leg takedown taking Borchanko straight to his back for three points in the first five seconds. Borchanko scored a takedown to close the lead to 3-1, but a reversal, then another takedown, gave Sanderson a 6-1 lead at the break. In the second period, Sanderson went from an ankle pick to a double leg finish, then quickly turned Borchanko again for two more exposure points, stretching his lead to 9-1.    Sanderson then moved on into the quarterfinals, where he edged 2002 World bronze medalist Majid Khodaei of Iran, 6-5 in overtime at 6:17. It was exciting bout, in which Sanderson needed to come from behind late in the bout for the win.    Sanderson scored first on a low single leg attack, taking a 1-0 lead. In a scramble situation, the officials awarded two points to each wrestler when both were exposed, and the score was 3-2 in favor of Sanderson at the break. Early in the second period, Khodaei scored a takedown to tie it at 3-3, then took a 5-3 lead on a two-point tilt. Sanderson came back with two takedowns, including the final score with just 22 seconds left in the period, to tie the bout at 5-5. Just 17 seconds into overtime, Sanderson won the bout on a single leg takedown for the 6-5 win.    He will face 1999 World Champion and 2000 Olympic silver medalist Yoel Romero of Cuba in the semifinals on Saturday morning during the 9:30 a.m. session. Romero and Sanderson have met previously in the Pan American Games and the Titan Games, with Romero winning those bouts.    2003 World silver medalist Kerry McCoy (Bethlehem, Pa., New York AC) lost the first match of the tournament for the United States after eight straight wins by the team. He fell to Marid Mutalimov of Kazakhstan, 4-1 in overtime at 6:11 at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.    The match gave Mutalimov the victory in the four-athlete pool, and allowed Mutalimov to advance to the semifinals. McCoy was eliminated from the competition with the defeat and ended the tournament with a 2-1 record. McCoy finished seventh in the final standings at his weight class.    Mutalimov received the first point when McCoy was penalized one point for pulling on the fingers. McCoy tied the match with less than 10 seconds left in the first period with a spin-behind takedown to tie the score at 1-1. There was no scoring in the second period. McCoy locked first in the clinch which started the overtime. Mutalimov hit a body lock throw for three points to end the match for the 4-1 win.    McCoy was competing in his second Olympic Games, placing fifth at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia.     The United States ended the day with 10-1 record, placing three athletes into the semifinals. By making the semifinals, these athletes can place no lower than fourth in their weight class.
