2000 Olympic champion and 2001 World Champion Rulon Gardner (Cascade, Colo./Sunkist Kids) won a bronze medal at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. in the Olympic Greco-Roman wrestling competition at the Ano Liossia Olympic Hall in Athens, Greece, Wednesday August 25. Gardner defeated Sajad Barzi of Iran in the bronze-medal match, 3-1 in overtime. Gardner scored his first point on a caution against Barzi for fleeing the mat with 10 seconds left in the first period to lead 1-0. In the second period, he added a takedown on the edge of the mat, for a 2-0 lead at the end of regulation. From the clinch position in overtime, Gardner scored the winning takedown on a bodylock in just 39 seconds. Barzi, a 23-year old who is a relative newcomer on the international scene, was third in the 2004 Asian Championships, and captured a gold medal at one of the Olympic Qualification Tournaments. Gardner becomes only the second American Greco-Roman wrestler to win two Olympic medals, joining Dennis Koslowski (1988 bronze, 1992 silver). At the conclusion of his match, Gardner took off his shoes and left them in the center of the mat, a traditional symbol within international wrestling that he had retired from competition. 2000 Olympian Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) dropped a 3-1 decision to 2002 World bronze medalist Eusebio Iancu Diacono of Romania to complete his pool competition. There was no scoring in the opening period, and the athletes went to the clinch. Diacono executed a three-point bodylock throw from the clinch to take a 3-0 lead. Gruenwald pressed the action the rest of the match, moving Diacono all over the mat, but officials did not penalize Diacono with a caution and one point penalty for fleeing the hold until the very last second of the match. Gruenwald had won his first match of the day, pinning Hugo Passos of Portugal. Diacono also defeated Passos, and won the pool, advancing to the Thursday morning quarterfinals. Gruenwald was scheduled to face Diacono in the bronze-medal match at the 2003 World Championships in France. However, Gruenwald severely injured his shoulder in the semifinals against two-time Olympic champion Armen Nazarian of Bulgaria at the World meet, and was unable to compete in the match against Diacono. Since then, Gruenwald recovered from his shoulder surgery and will have the chance to battle Diacono. Winning individual gold medals were Istvan Majoros of Hungary at 55 kg/121 lbs., Farid Mansurov of Azerbaijan at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Alexei Michine of Russia at 85 kg/185 lbs. and Hassan Baroev of Russia at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Majoros beat Gueidar Mamedaliev of Russia, 3-1, in overtime at 6:08. Mamedaliev scored first, but Majoros scored two second period points to lead at 2-1 at the end of regulation. From the overtime clinch, Majoros took Mamedaliev down in just eight seconds for the winning third point. Mansurov jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first period. Eroglu made a comeback in the second period, but the fourth point by Mansurov proved the difference in a 4-3 victory. Michine scored a point in a clinch at the start of the second period for a 1-0 lead which held until the end of regulation. In the clinch that started overtime, Abrahamian scored the point for a 1-1 tie. No other points were scored, and Michine was declared the winner. Georgiy Tsurtsumia of Kazakhstan led 1-0 after the first period, and added another point on a gutwrench in the second period to get ahead of Baroev. With about a minute left in the match, Baroev brought Tsurtsumia to his back with a bodylock, receiving three points then an additional backpoint. He held Tsurtsumia down until the match ended, winning 4-2. An athlete from Greece, Artiom Kiourgkian, won the bronze medal at 55 kg/121 lbs. with a 6-1 decision over Oleksiy Vakulenko of Ukraine and the large Greek audience rocked the arena with noise throughout the bout. The quarterfinals, semifinals and finals for the 60 kg, 74 kg and 96 kg divisions will be held on Thursday. There will be no U.S. athletes in the matches on Thursday, as the other U.S. entry, Garrett Lowney (Freedom, Wis./Minnesota Storm) was eliminated on Wednesday morning with two losses at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
