55 kg/121 lbs. - Dennis Hall, Plover, Wis. (Sunkist Kids) Talk about your loss. "The referee was on me from the minute. He didn't like my style and that's where I've got to wrestle. I fought as hard as I could. I ain't making any excuses. He beat me 3-0. You saw it in the score. But I'll tell you one thing, he's going to be sore as hell tomorrow when he wrestles the semis." Did the clinch decide the match? "The guy was locked, and then he lifts my arm up before they blow the whistle. The clinch decided the match. He got a jump and beat me off the whistle because the referee had my arm." 66 kg/145.5 lbs. - Oscar Wood, Fountain, Colo. (U.S. Army) What can you take from this experience? "I have to find something positive with this experience, otherwise it's all for nothing. I'll go home and try to figure out some of the things that went wrong. Will you continue next year? "I'm not to the point where I'm taking it year-to-year. I'm definitely thinking four years. I've only had a couple international tournaments and my experience really showed today. I don't think that those guys are that much better than me. I just think they're that much smarter than me right n right now." 84 kg/185 lbs. - Brad Vering, Colorado Springs, Colo. (New York AC) Talk about your performance. "I came here to wrestle. I lost my first match. It would have been a good experience for me. My family is here. It would have been nice for them to see me wrestle again. (Mohamed Abd El Fatah) was a World champion. I need to have those kinds of matches. That would have been a good match for me." What's next? "I'm young in terms of Greco-Roman wrestling. I will be getting ready for the World Championships and the next Olympic cycle." 120 kg/264.5 lbs. - Rulon Gardner, Cascade, Colo. (Sunkist Kids) How much did you know about this opponent? "I didn't know too much of what he had. He's a real strong wrestler. He's young. He's got a lot of power. You can see that just by him coming out here and wrestling guys that are a definitely bigger than him. You have to have tenacity and you have to have strength to go along with it. Going out in that first minute, I could see his cross-pummel. The last thing I wanted to do was get caught in a cross-pummel and him come in and hurt me. I have bad elbows in both arms and if he gets a good move on there, he could actually dislocate our elbow. I was being a little cautious with it. We went to the clinch. I was trying to give him a good lock and he didn't want to lock up. I usually don't get my engines running until at least the second period." How did these first matches compare to the ones in Sydney? "Nothing against those guys in my past, but I think these matches here were tougher than the first few ones I had in Sydney. Those guys in Sydney were a little more inexperienced and a lot those guys aren't here today. Poland has a real good wrestler. Lithuania has grown up a lot the last few years and Moryeyko has been a numerous times World placer. Sydney was 8-2, 6-0 and the final match was 2-1. This was a good experience and I'll take any victory out here because as long as you win, you get to move on." Do your opponents know you very well? "I could tell that they study me a little bit more because they know what I'm doing, when I'm doing it, how I'm doing it and why I'm doing it. So that's always tough to try and out-think an opponent that you've never really wrestled before. I was just trying to go out and get into the groove of the match."
