2000 Olympic champion and 2001 World Champion Rulon Gardner (Cascade, Colo./Sunkist Kids) qualified for the semifinals at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. in Greco-Roman wrestling at the Ano Liossia Olympic Hall in Athens, Greece, Tuesday August 24. Gardner went 3-0 for the day in his pool competition. In the evening session, he defeated Marek Mikulski of Poland by a 3-0 score. The first period was scoreless, so the wrestlers were required to clinch to start the second period. After repeated efforts by the mat referee to get the athletes into the correct clinch position, the officials penalized Mikulski with a caution and two points to Gardner for refusing to clinch. Later in the period, after wearing Mikulski down with an aggressive attack, Gardner scored a takedown with 30 seconds left in the match for the 3-0 win. Gardner won two matches in the opening session stopping Minduagus Mitzgaitis of Lithuania and 1996 Olympic bronze medalist Sergey Moreyko of Bulgaria. Gardner is scheduled to face Georgi Tsurtsumia of Kazakhstan in the semifinal match, which will be held at the 9:30 a.m. session on Wednesday, August 25. The medal match finals in the first four weight classes are set for the 5:30 p.m. session on Wednesday. Olympic silver medalist Dennis Hall (Plover, Wis./Sunkist Kids) was eliminated from the competition at 55 kg/121 lbs. after dropping a 3-0 decision to Oleksiy Vakulenko of Ukraine. There was no score in the first period and the athletes went to the clinch in the second period. Vakulenko was able to throw Hall for three points from the clinch, then held off Hall's furious attack for the rest of the match. The win allowed Vakulenko to advance to the quarterfinals Hall won his first match in the morning, defeating Petr Svehla of Czech Republic. Hall finished with a 1-1 record for the 2004 Olympics. Hall has won three career World-level medals, the 1995 World gold, a 1996 Olympic silver and a 1994 World bronze. He dropped in weight to make the Olympic team, his third Olympic berth (1992, 1996, 2004). Two other U.S. wrestlers who were defeated in the morning session completed their pool competition and did not advance. They will also not be competing on Wednesday. Brad Vering (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) won his evening session match by forfeit over 2001 World Champion Mukran Vaktangadze of Georgia at 84 kg/185 lbs. Both Vering and Vaktangadze lost matches in the morning session to 2001 bronze medalist Mohamed Mohamed of Egypt. Both Vering and Vaktangadze had been eliminated from medal contention. The Georgian wrestler decided not to compete, and did not show up for the match. Oscar Wood (Fountain, Colo./U.S. Army) dropped his final match of the Olympics at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., losing an 11-1 technical fall to two-time World Champion Mkkhitar Manukyan of Kazakhstan. Manukyan scored points on a bodylock throw, a gut wrench and an arm spin in rapid succession, finishing the bout in the first period. Wood lost decisions in the morning session to Konstantinos Arkoudeas of Greece and Jannis Zamanduridis of Germany, ending the 2004 Olympics with an 0-3 record. The other three weight classes in the Greco-Roman tournament weighed in this afternoon and will start their competition at the 9:30 a.m. session on Wednesday, August 24: 60 kg/132 lbs., 74 kg/163 lbs. and 96 kg/211.5 lbs. The U.S. has two entries in the final three divisions: 2000 Olympian Jim Gruenwald (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and 2000 Olympic bronze medalist Garrett Lowney (Freedom, Wis./Minnesota Storm) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
