· The first Olympic Games featuring women's wrestling started at 9:30 a.m. at the Ano Liossia Olympic Hall in Athens, Greece, with competition on two mats. The first two matches were Chihara Icho of Japan vs. Lyndsey Belisle of Canada at 48 kg on Mat A, and Stavroula Zygouri of Greece vs. Stephanie Gross of Germany at 63 kg on Mat B. Icho and Zygouri won these first bouts in Olympic women's wrestling history. · The first pin in Olympic women's wrestling history came at 63 kg/138.75 lbs., when Sara McMann of the United States pinned Lili Meng of China in 2:01. · The first technical fall in Olympic women's wrestling history came at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., when Icho stopped Belisle 12-0 in that opening bout. · Japan won all of its matches on Sunday, placing four athletes in the semifinals. All four of Japan's entries were 2003 World champions, including Icho who dropped down from a non-Olympic weight division (51 kg). · The closest match that Japan had that could have been a loss came at 63 kg, when Kaori Icho was tied late in the match with past World champion Alena Kartashova of Russia at 2-2. With less than 20 seconds to go, Icho put Kartashova to her back during a scramble and emerged with a 6-2 win. · Seven nations had full four-athlete teams in the field, but Japan was the only one with an undefeated first session. The other teams with full squads are Canada, China, Greece, Russia, Ukraine and the United States. · Japan had the most semifinalists with four, followed by the United States, Ukraine and France with two each. Other nations with semifinalists are Ukraine, Canada, Sweden, Greece and China. · The Greek fans had a great match to applaud when Stavroula Zygouri came from behind to defeat past World champion Sara Eriksson of Sweden at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Zygouri scored the go-ahead points in her 5-3 win late in the match, which placed her in the semifinals on Monday against Sara McMann of the USA. · The nation with the largest fan contingent for women's wrestling appeared to be Japan. There is an organized cheering section, and the fans are wearing headbands and waving flags. There was also a large and vocal section supporting host Greece. The USA has a good section as well, which chanted "USA, USA" during a number of the bouts. · The loudest noise in the arena came early in the second session, when there was a Japanese wrestler on Mat 2 and a Greek wrestler on Mat 1. When Maria Louiza Vyroni of Greece won her bout at 72 kg, while Saori Yoshida of Japan won her bout at 55 kg at the same time, the crowd was going wild. · The U.S. has two officials working the Games, Rick Tucci of Florida and Bill Stecklein of New Jersey. · Both of the wildcard athletes in the women's division are at 48 kg, Leopoldina Ross of Guinea-Bissau and Fadhila Louati of Tunisia. Neither won a match or scored a technical point.
