48 kg/105.5 lbs. - Patricia Miranda, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Dave Schultz WC) Talk about your slow start in this match. "I think I was a little bit hesitant to execute right away. In the second half I started not waiting as long. I'm going to be a little more active before my next match." Talk about your rematch with Merlini. "That's a long time coming. The last time I wrestled her was in New York. Previous to that was in Russia. We've split 1-1. She's been a dominant force. She's a very good wrestler. It's just a real redemption. I'm really glad to get to bang heads with her. It's going to be good wrestling. It's what sport is all about." What is different about the Olympics than any other event? "I think the preparation for it was a little bit different in that we had so many helpful people. We got really nice attention from the press. We had training partners that helped work us out. So that felt a little bit different. We were being a little bit specialed. The actual match, there's a little bit more umph, that everything counts and you want to leave everything out on the mat. But besides that, it really feels like a fight between two people. It's what's great about wrestling. They really preserved it, even for something as big as the Games." Are you disappointed that two of your teammates didn't advance to the semifinals? "The fact that two people didn't advance on a team of only four is painful. We're very closely knit. Our well wishes to each other are very close. But, it necessarily isn't tied to success either. I think Tela wrestled proud. I'm proud of how she wrestled. Toccara met up with her gold-medal match the first round and she took it like a champ. That's exactly what I wanted. We needed to knock out Japan so we had a chance at the team title. She just had a champions attitude. One of the best things about the Olympics is that you had that clash of the titans." 55 kg/121 lbs. - Tela O'Donnell, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Dave Schultz WC) How are you feeling right now? "I put my heart into winning. You want to do well. But hopefully with harder practice I can become a good wrestler." Does it feel like the Olympics? "It feels like the Olympics. Everything is so big." Talk about your last match. "She's a very strong wrestler. She was good at moving me. It is stuff that I can work on. I'm proud that she's doing well. I hope the best for Tonya." 63 kg/138.75 lbs. - Sara McMann, Colorado Springs, Colo. (Sunkist Kids) How disappointed are you knowing that you still move into the semifinals? "She's a really tough wrestler. The times that I've beat her, some of them have been close and some of them have been larger gaps. I've always gone out there respecting her completely. She's very strong. She trains hard. I never take her lightly. Today I think I had the wrong driving force. When I got out there with China, I knew I had to beat her. She's really tough. I wrestled up to her level and a little above it. But in this, I wrestled not to lose, and that's a good lesson for wrestlers. I'm lucky it didn't cost me." She placed 12th in the World Championships last year. What has she changed? "She's a better wrestler then that. You lose early in the pool and it depends on points for placing. She could have been top three." 72 kg/158.5 lbs. - Toccara Montgomery, Cleveland, Ohio (New York AC) You don't seem pleased with your last win. "I didn't come to wrestle for fifth and sixth, so it's a little disappointing." Olympic Coach Terry Steiner What are your thoughts on Sara McMann's loss? "She went into that match knowing that if she didn't get pinned, she went on. That's the wrong attitude to take into a wrestling match. She'll have to learn from that, but for right now we need to let it go and move on. That disappoints me a little bit that she would take that mindset into a match." What were your expectations coming into this first day? "I thought we had a good chance at probably getting three people through. Four would have been great. But we'll go with what we've got right now. Now the thing is we need to get two golds. We are very capable of it at both of those weight classes, but we have tough opponents tomorrow."
