Iowa State to Host 2005 U.S. Wrestling World Team Trials

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State University will play host to the 2005 USA Wrestling World Team Trials, Jun 16-19 at Hilton Coliseum, Iowa State head wrestling coach Bobby Douglas announced Monday. The World Team Trials is the meet that determines who will represent the U.S. at the 2005 World Freestyle Wrestling Championships.     "This is a great moment for our wrestling program, Iowa State University and the city of Ames," Douglas said. "The nation's best wrestlers will be here next summer and I know it will be a first-class event."     Douglas made the remarks as he and former undefeated four-time NCAA champion Cael Sanderson prepared to leave Ames for the Olympic Games in Athens. Sanderson will represent the U.S. in the 84kg freestyle weight class. Douglas, the head coach of the 1992 U.S. Olympic freestyle team, is one of three U.S. head coaches for the Athens Games. ISU assistant coach Chris Bono is a member of the official U.S. team delegation as a workout partner.     "USA Wrestling is thrilled to award the 2005 World Team Trials to Ames, Iowa, and Iowa State University," said USA Wrestling Executive Director Rich Bender. "The Midwest is a wrestling hotbed and we are looking forward to showcasing our great sport in the heartland of wrestling."     "We are confident the community of Ames and Iowa State University will provide our athletes and fans from around the country an excellent wrestling experience," Bender added. The 2005 World Team Trials is an important event for USA Wrestling and the future of our Olympic wrestlers. We are excited that Iowa State University and the community of Ames, Iowa, has agreed to host USA Wrestling's premier event. With their experience in hosting the 2004 Big 12 Wrestling Championships as well as past NCAA Championships, we are confident they will do an outstanding job in displaying this country's great wrestling talent."
