LAS VEGAS - Randy Couture has unfinished business to take care, when he fights Vitor Belfort for the Light Heavyweight title in Ultimate Fighting Championshipâ 49: Unfinished Business at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday, August 21st. Randy "The Natural" Couture (12-6-0) from Portland, OR, will be looking to reclaim the Light Heavyweight title he lost Vitor "The Phenom" Belfort (12-3-0) from Sao Paulo, Brazil in a fight that ended quickly at UFC 46: Super Natural. Belfort is out to prove that his win over Couture was no fluke. Belfort caught Couture with a glancing left hook in the first 30 seconds of the fight that opened a deep cut under Couture's left eye. As the fighters clinched, referee John McCarthy stopped the fight at the 48-second mark so the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) doctor could check the cut. The doctor determined that Couture suffered a corneal abrasion impairing his vision and that he could not continue. Suddenly, it was over almost before it began and Belfort was the new UFC light heavyweight champ. Couture's eye is back to 100% and he has "Unfinished Business" to take care of and one man stands in his way, light heavyweight champion, Vitor Belfort. "I'm glad that Vitor is willing to step up and settle it properly. He doesn't feel good about winning it that way. I think this is a continuation of what we started in January. I don't look at what happened in our 20 seconds in the cage as a legitimate fight," stated Couture about the rematch. Belfort expects a different fight than the last and knows Couture will be ready, "I don't think about Randy being 41 or that maybe he's past his prime. Tito and Chuck thought that and got beat up. Randy is in tremendous shape. He's a lion. It's going to be two lions, two warriors going to war in that Octagon." Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell puts his top contender status in the Light Heavyweight Division on the line against Vernon "Tiger" White. Liddell (13-3) from San Luis Obispo, CA earned his chance to face the Couture/Belfort winner at UFC: 47, finishing off former champion Tito Ortiz with a TKO in the second round. Liddell risks losing that championship shot if White defeats him. White (11-6-1) from Palo Alto, CA wants to prove he is among the elite in the Light Heavyweight Division. A win against Liddell would put him there. In his UFC debut White battled to a draw against Ian Freeman at UFC 43. This should be a great battle between two great strikers plus the fact that there is bad blood between the two. "I know Vernon doesn't like me but that doesn't matter. He is just a small obstacle between me and the title and I'm going to knock him out," said a confident Liddell. White views the upcoming fight much different," I'm going mess him up! This fight has been a long time coming. There will be fireworks. I can't wait to get into the octagon with him. This fight will end with Chuck being a bloody mess." Yves Edwards and Josh "The Punk" Thomson both think they're the best lightweights in the UFC and by night's end one of them will have bragging rights. Edwards (25-8-1) from The Woodlands, TX has an impressive five-fight winning streak in the UFC. Edwards is coming off a split decision win over Hermes Franca at UFC 47. Thomson (25-1-0) from San Jose, CA is undefeated in the UFC. Thomson won his last fight at UFC 46 also defeating Franca by unanimous decision. Thomson anticipates a stand up fight with Edwards, "This will be a stand up war and if a takedown presents itself I'll take that as well. He's a counter fighter; you can't train that out of him in this short period of time. All I care about is whether the judges finally notice the fact that he's running instead of fighting." Matt "The Law" Lindland returns to the Octagon taking on David Terrell. Middleweight, Lindland (9-2-0) from Eagle Creek, OR avenged a previous loss to Falaniko Vitale at UFC 45 forcing him to tap out due to strikes. Terrell (9-1-0) from Concord, CA will be making his UFC debut. Welterweight, Nick Diaz takes on Karo Parisyan as he looks to prove he is among the top welterweights in the world. Diaz (11-2-0) from Stockton, CA proved his championship caliber knocking out Robbie Lawler at UFC 47. Parisyan (19-3-0) from North Hollywood, CA is coming off a split decision loss to Georges St. Pierre. In a welterweight bout Chris "Lights Out" Lytle is stepping up on short notice to fight Ronald "The Machine Gun" Juhn. Lytle (28-10-4) from Indianapolis, IN replaces Phil Baroni who had to drop out due injury. Lytle is coming off a submission victory over Tiki Goshen at UFC 47. Juhn (26-11-2) from Honolulu, HI is making his UFC debut. Heavyweight, Mike Kyle makes his return to the Octagon after a successful debut at UFC 47, knocking out Wes Sims. Kyle (11-2-0) from San Jose, CA will meet Justin Eilers (8-2-1) fighting out Davenport, IA. Eilers is making his UFC debut. Rounding out the card Middleweight, Joe Riggs (20-4-0) from Phoenix, AZ faces Joe Doerksen (8-2-1) from Winnipeg, Canada. Both fighters are making their UFC debut.
