Lighting the Cauldron 1996 high jump silver medalist Niki Bakoyianni of Greece will light the Olympic cauldron at the ancient Acropolis hill on August 12, the eve of the Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies. The cauldron will be lit on an area locals call the "sacred rock." Costas Kenteris, who won the 200-meter gold medal at the 2000 Olympic Games, is expected to ignite the cauldron at the stadium. Failed Test Irish distance runner Cathal Lombard tested positive for the banned drug EPO and could be suspended for two years, Irish officials announced on Saturday evening. Lombard was scheduled to compete in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the Athens Olympics. Lombard is Ireland's record-holder in the 10,000. Pittman Out Jana Pittman, the 400-meter hurdles World champion, was forced to withdraw from the Olympics after tearing cartilage in her right knee during warmups for the Weltklasse Golden League meet in Zurich, Switzerland on Friday night. "This year's campaign over ... we've made the decision that I won't run at the Olympics," Pittman told Australia's Channel Seven on Sunday. "We're getting a second opinion in London but that's the prognosis at this stage." Pittman, 21 years old, was doing hurdles drills when she was injured. Arrival The U.S. Greco-Roman wrestling team arrived on Sunday afternoon at the Athens airport. The team has decided to rest on Sunday evening, and after team processing and a press conference on Monday, will hold its first practice in Athens on Monday evening. The U.S. women's freestyle wrestling team will arrive in Athens on Monday evening at 5:00 p.m. (local Athens time). This is the first Olympic Games in which women's freestyle wrestling will be featured. Can Jones Defend Her Crown? It appears that American track star Marion Jones may have an opportunity to defend her 100 meter gold medal afterall. Jones placed fifth in the Olympic Trials, two spots out of qualifying for the event in the Olympics. However, reigning World champion Torri Edwards is likely to be suspended for two years for failing a drug test due to a banned substance, and 37 year-old Gail Devers, fourth in the Olympic Trials, may opt out to focus on the 100 meter hurdles. Delayed Ruling The International Olympic Committee delayed ruling Saturday on whether to strip the entire U.S. 1,600-meter relay team of gold medals from the Sydney Games, saying it will wait until all appeals have been completed. The team, which included Michael Johnson, could lose its medals because of a doping violation by teammate Jerome Young a year before the 2000 Olympics. Young has already been stripped. The International Association of Athletics Federations recommended last month that the entire team be penalized because Young should have been ineligible. The IAAF allowed 60 days for appeals to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. The deadline is Sept. 18.
