Blacksburg, Va. - Heavyweight Mike Faust has given a commitment to attend Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University next fall and compete on the wrestling team, according to Faust. He will have two years of eligibility and is expected to start as the Hokies heavyweight during the 2004-05 wrestling season. Faust transfers in from the Univ. of Pennsylvania, where he spent his first two seasons as the Quakers heavyweight. It was believed by many that Faust would attend Lehigh Univ., one of Penn's biggest rivals, next year to continue his education and athletic career. Earlier this summer, Faust had committed to Oklahoma State Univ. next year, but began to look elsewhere when NCAA heavyweight champion Steve Mocco transferred to the Cowboys from the Univ. of Iowa. In the 2002-03 season, Faust took an academic leave of absence from Penn, and in 2003-04, he used an Olympic redshirt year to work towards earning a spot on the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team. He placed seventh at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Team Trials-Wrestling. His career record at Penn was 33-28. His highest postseason finish was fifth in the 2001 EIWA Championships. Faust's role as Penn's heavyweight Matt Feast earned All-American honors by placing fifth at the NCAA Tournament. In July, Virginia Tech hired former Iowa assistant coach and 2004 Olympic coach Tom Brands as its new head wrestling coach.
