Fargo, N.D. - Freestyle competition at the ASICS/Vaughan Junior National Championships went pretty much as expected on Thursday evening, with only a couple of surprises. Five of the six defending champions remained undefeated after the first day of competition. They are Tony Mustari of Colorado at 112 lbs., Coleman Scott of Pennsylvania at 130 lbs., returning double-champion Brent Metcalf of Michigan at 145 lbs., Rocco Caponi of Ohio at 171 lbs. and Matt Fields of Iowa at 275 lbs. All five wrestlers recorded 5-0 records on the day. Mustari outscored his three opponents 31-0, Scott recorded three technical superiority wins and Fields won twice by fall. The only defending champion to lose a match on Thursday was T.J. Sebolt of Iowa, who dropped a 6-3 decision to Jeff Kusich of Pennsylvania at 119 lbs. Sebolt's title hopes now hinge on the hopes of a loss by Kusich in pool competition. Another big surprise was the loss of 2003 Cadet freestyle champion and highly-touted 2004-05 college recruit Hudson Taylor of New Jersey. Taylor was dominated by Nick Davis of Florida in a 10-0 loss at 171 lbs. However, a number of 2003 Cadet freestyle national champions are still in the hunt for titles, including Connor McDonald of Delaware at 98 lbs., Rollie Peterkin of Massachusetts at 105 lbs., Michael Rowe of Maryland at 125 lbs., Braden L'Amoreaux of Michigan, Joseph Cornejo of Kansas and Matt Dragon of Pennsylvania at 140 lbs., Nick Marable of Tennessee at 152 lbs., David Craig of Florida at 171 lbs., Taylor Moore of Missouri at 189 lbs. and Robbie Smith of California at 215 lbs. There were also eight 2004 Junior Greco-Roman champions still undefeated in freestyle competition after the first day, none more dramatic than Arizona's Henry Cejudo, who trailed 4-2 in a bout against Frankie Gomez of Puerto Rico at 112 lbs. before recording a fall at the 5:05 mark. The other wrestlers working towards double titles that are still undefeated are Matt McNaughton of Illinois at 98 lbs., Dan Bishop of New York at 105 lbs., Troy Nickerson of New York at 119 lbs., Jayson Ness of Minnesota at 125 lbs., Kyle Bounds of Washington at 152 lbs., Brandon Halsey of California at 215 lbs. and Nick Smith of Idaho at 275 lbs. Junior freestyle competition will resume at 9 a.m. (Central Time) on Friday morning. TheMat.com will provide complete results of this year's ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet National Championships.
