The 21st edition of the Virginia Duals takes place this weekend in Hampton, Va., beginning Friday, January 12, 2001 with the finals for the college division being scheduled for 8:30 p.m. Saturday, January 13, 2001.      The Virginia Duals college division will feature a number of teams ranked in the Top 25. The strength may be down a little from other years due to the National Duals scheduled for next weekend at Penn State University, where eight of the top 10 ranked teams are scheduled to compete.  However, the results of this tournament, which is always very competitive, will have a bearing on the national team rankings.    Here is a list of the teams with their seed and their first round dual matches.    (1) Lock Haven vs. Old Dominion   (8) Cornell vs. Rider  (5) Indiana vs. West Virginia  (4) Pennsylvania vs. Buffalo  (3) North Carolina vs. Kent State  (6) Missouri vs. Cal-State Bakersfield  (7) Central Michigan vs. Virginia  (2) Wisconsin vs. James Madison    Semifinal action for the Virginia Duals begins on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. Semifinal matches according to seed will be (1) Lock Haven vs. (4) (Pennsylvania) and (2)Wisconsin vs.  (3) North Carolina.      The top individual performers for the Virginia Duals expected to compete will be JaMarr Billman (Lock Haven), Mike Maney (Lock Haven), Viktor Sveda (Indiana), Yoshi Nakamura (Penn), Mason Lenhard (Penn), John Mark Bentley (North Carolina), Matt Kenny (North Carolina), Chuckie Connor (North Carolina), Donny Pritzlaff (Wisconsin), Ahmad Sanders (Central Michigan), Jack Leffler (Central Michigan), Brent Thompson (Kent State).     Finals action begins at 8:30 p.m. Saturday.  Expect big things from No. 3 seed North Carolina.  Ranked about No. 25 in the NWCA/TheMat.com Division I team poll for most of the year, coach Bill Lam's Tarheels have wrestled well as of late, defeating previously seventh-ranked Lehigh in dual competition last week. The victory over Lehigh earned them the No. 3 seed at the Virginia Duals.    With this being the case, I am going with North Carolina over Wisconsin in the semifinals for the mild upset.  In the finals however, Lock Haven gets the nod over North Carolina in an entertaining & close match.  Junior transfer JaMarr Billman will look to continue his winning ways after getting a pin and technical fall in his first two outings of the year since returning to action.  Lock Haven's key performers McCormack (125), Bair (133), Billman (149), and Zerkle (197) all will play key roles in getting the Eagles to the finals. A key match, if it develops, will be at 149 where Bentley and Billman would potentially match up.  On paper, due to mat time this year, most would go with Bentley.  Billman as we all know is very dangerous and it is only a matter of time until he hits his stride.  This match up could be very pivotal in deciding this dual.    In addition to the 16-team Div. I tournament, an eight-team *Small College* division will also be contested, featuring teams from NCAA Div. II and Div. III, plus NAIA and NCWA programs.     One of the other reasons that the Virginia Duals is such an exciting spectator event is the very impressive high school field that enters each year. There are three high school divisions, featuring top teams from Virginia and from across the nation. There is a "National High School Division," an "American High School Division" and a "Black and Blue High School Division." A number of the programs at the Virginia Duals have been ranked, or have received votes, in the NWCA/TheMat.com High School rankings this year.
