Fargo, N.D. - Defending champion Donny Altman of Kansas is the only undefeated wrestler trying to repeat as champion at the Cadet Greco-Roman National Championships in the FargoDome. Altman is now 5-0 at 91 lbs., including a thrilling 15-10 win in his final pool match over Andy Pokorny of Nebraska. Altman now needs only to defeat Fred Santaite of New Jersey in a round-robin match to advance to the finals. Scott O'Donnell of Missouri, the other defending champion in this tournament, also still has a chance to repeat as a champion, despite losing his final pool match 3-1 in overtime to Dan Malouf of Illinois at 112 lbs. O'Donnell will wrestle Dak Adamson of New Mexico, who is undefeated at 8-0, in round-robin competition. Since Malouf has one loss, it would be possible for O'Donnell to earn another trip to the finals with a win over Adamson. At 84 lbs., Nathan Furches of Kansas became the first wrestling of the tournament to qualify for the finals. Furches won five matches, his first two in overtime, to become the only undefeated wrestler in his pool. His opponent is not yet decided. 2003 Cadet Greco-Roman All-Americans that remain undefeated are Jake Quinten of Pennsylvania at 91 lbs., Paul Gentry of Idaho and Matthew Kyler of Pennsylvania at 98 lbs., Zachary Sanders of Minnesota at 105 lbs., Kelly Kubec of Washington at 112 lbs., Matt Vacanti of Nebraska at 119 lbs., Brandon Sitch of Washington at 140 lbs., Adam Hall of Idaho at 145 lbs., Talon Knox of Utah and Jesse Robbins of Florida at 152 lbs., Kaleb Young of Minnesota at 160 lbs., Patrick Flynn of Pennsylvania at 189 lbs., Brent Eidenshink of Minnesota and Skip Crooks of Wyoming at 215 lbs. Quinten, Gentry, Sanders, Flynn, Crooks are two wins away from reaching the finals. Kyler, Kubec, Vacanti, Sitch, Hall and Eidenshink are one win away from competing in the finals. Knox and Robbins and Young are still in pool competition. Mike Powers of Connecticut (140 lbs.) and Rob Waltko of Pennsylvania (152 lbs.), both All-Americans in Cadet Greco-Roman competition last year, have one loss but can still reach the finals. Cadet Greco-Roman competition will continue at 9 a.m. (Central Time) on Monday morning. Medal matches and finals will begin at 3 p.m. TheMat.com will provide complete results of this year's ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet National Championships.
