Three women wrestlers won their Championship Series in a special Women's National Team Trials in three non-Olympic weight classes at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo., July 21. Winning the best-of-three series at their weight divisions were Stephanie Murata (Minden, Nev./Sunkist Kids) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., Sally Roberts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 59 kg/130 lbs. and Katie Downing (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. All three won their series in two straight matches. All three were winners of the Challenge Tournament on Tuesday, and beat the No. 1 seed in their divisions on Wednesday. Murata, a 2001 World silver medalist, wasted no time in winning her first match, pinning Debbi Sakai (Mililani, Hawaii/Missouri Valley) in just 53 seconds. In the second match, Murata needed just over two minutes to secure a 10-0 technical fall over Sakai, using a variety of turns from the mat for back points. In her first match, Roberts, a 2003 World bronze medalist, traded points with six-time U.S. World Team member Lauren Lamb (Farmington, N.Y./Michigan WC) before scoring a pin at the 2:57 mark. Lamb scored two first-period takedowns, but Roberts took control with two hip toss throws, the second eventually resulting in the fall. The second match was very close, with Lamb scoring a takedown in the first period and Roberts scoring a takedown in the second period. The match was tied at 1-1 at the end of regulation. From the clinch, Roberts hit a three-point hip toss to secure a 4-1 overtime win. Downing controlled 2004 U.S. Nationals champion Ali Bernard (New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Storm) in their first match, winning 7-0. Downing took a 5-0 lead in the first period with a trap-arm gut wrench for two points and a front headlock throw for three points. In the second match, Downing threw Bernard to her back with a hip toss, and had to readjust her pinning hold a number of times before securing a first-period pin in 2:02. Roberts and Downing earn the No. 1 ranking on Women's Team USA at their weight classes, as well as a spot on the 2004 U.S. World Cup Team, which will compete in Tokyo, Japan, Oct. 8-9. In Murata's weight, 2004 U.S. Nationals champion Malinda Ripley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) received an extension for her championship series due to injury. (Only a national champion can receive an extension). There will be a Special Wrestle-off between Murata and Ripley at a time prior to the World Cup determined by the Women's National Coach, if Ripley is able to recover and wrestle. If Ripley can't wrestle, Murata becomes No. 1 on the National Team and will compete at the World Cup, and Ripley becomes No. 2 on the National Team. This Women's National Team Trials was held in order to set the rankings and the national team support for athletes who compete in the three non-Olympic weight classes. All athletes who qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, regardless of weight division, are eligible to participate in the Women's National Team Trials if they so chose. There are four other international women's wrestling weight classes that will be contested at the Athens Olympic Games in August. The rankings at those weight classes were determined at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling in Indianapolis, Ind., May 21-23. CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES CHAMPION QUOTES 51 kg - Stephanie Murata "There were a lot more things I wanted to work on. I was surprised that I got cut. I never got cut above the eye before." "Debbi wrestled well. She did her best out there. She deserves to wrestle for a third place, rather than just take third place." (about possible series with Malinda Ripley) "Since we have to wrestle off a month ahead of the World Cup, she probably won't be ready by then. It is not fair for the rest of the weight class to wait until she's ready to wrestle." (about the Olympic Trials) "I wasn't happy with the way I wrestled at the Olympic Trials. I wrestled well after I lost, but that wasn't the match that mattered. I am sure Tela (O'Donnell) will do a great job; it is in good hands. I wrestled so poorly at Trials, I deserved to lose." 59 kg - Sally Roberts "My first match was a lot more intense. The second match was more 'World Championship' style… really close. There weren't any risks being taken. She was able to control the tieups in the second match. It closed down my offense. I didn't want to take risks and make mistakes. I saw it was going to the clinch. I felt my throw was there and took advantage." "It wasn't pretty but I got the job done. I have got until October to work with Terry Steiner and Terry Brands and prepare to win the World Cup." 67 kg - Katie Downing "I'm really excited to go to the World Cup. I had mixed feelings going into this tournament. I wrestled as I expected. I am happy to make a World Team, and to hold No. 1 for a year, instead of a few months." (about Ali Bernard) "She's so flexible. You could see it in that match. It's hard to pin her. It has to be perfect, or she'll squirm out of things." "I am pumped for the World Cup."
