A total of 19 wrestlers weighed in for a special Women's National Team Trials in three non-Olympic weight classes at the U.S. Olympic Training Center (USOTC) in Colorado Springs, Colo., July 20-21. The three weight divisions are 51 kg/112.25 lbs., 59 kg/130 lbs. and 67 kg/147.5 lbs. The competition will be held in Gym 9 of SportsCenter II on the USOTC campus, the upstairs gym in the same building where the wrestling room resides. This Women's National Team Trials is being held in order to set the rankings and the national team support for athletes who compete in the non-Olympic weight classes. In addition, the winner of the event in each weight class will represent the United States at the Women's World Cup in Tokyo, Japan, Oct. 8-9. All athletes who qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, regardless of weight division, are eligible to participate in the Women's National Team Trials if they choose. Two of the three U.S. Nationals champions at the non-Olympic weight classes did not enter the Women's National Team Trials. Malinda Ripley (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids), the U.S. Nationals champion at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., was injured and requested an extension on her Championship Series. The U.S. Nationals runner-up, Debbi Sakai (Mililani, Hawaii/Missouri Valley), moved up into the No. 1 seed in the competition, and advances directly into Wednesday's Championship Series. If medically able, Ripley will face the winner of the Women's National Team Trials for the No. 1 spot on the National Team and the spot on the World Cup team at a time and place to be determined. Na'Tasha Umemoto (Portland, Ore./Sunkist Kids), the U.S. Nationals champion at 59 kg/130 lbs., did not attend the competition. She loses her spot in the competition, and will not be a member of the U.S. National Team for 2004-05. The U.S. Nationals runner-up, Lauren Lamb (Farmington, N.Y./Michigan WC) moved up into the No. 1 seed in the competition, and advances directly into Wednesday's Championship Series. Ali Bernard (New Ulm, Minn./Minnesota Storm), the U.S. Nationals champion at 67 kg/147.5 lbs., made weight and retains the No. 1 seed in her weight class for this competition. The 16 other athletes will wrestle in the Challenge Tournament on Tuesday, July 20. Only the winner of the Challenge Tournament on Tuesday will advance. The Challenge Tournament begins at 9:30 a.m. and will continue until completion. The second day of the event is the Championship Series on Wednesday, July 21st, where the No. 1 seed will wrestle against the winner of the Challenge Tournament in a best-of-three series. Session times for the Championship Series are 9:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. There are past two World medalists in the Challenge Tournament at both 51 kg and 59 kg. Taking the No. 1 position in the Challenge Tournament at 51 kg is 2001 World silver medalist Stephanie Murata (Minden, Nev./Sunkist Kids). Earning the No. 2 position in the Challenge Tournament at 51 kg is 2003 World bronze medalist Jenny Wong (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids). Taking the No. 1 position in the Challenge Tournament at 59 kg is 2003 World bronze medalist Sally Roberts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC). Taking the No. 2 position in the Challenge Tournament at 59 kg is two-time World silver medalist Tina George (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army). There are only four weight divisions contested in women's wrestling at the Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Normally, there are seven weight classes for women's wrestling at the World Championships during the other years. Competition in just the four Olympic weight classes were held at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Wrestling in Indianapolis, Ind., May 21-23.
