Due to financial reasons, the Russian national wrestling team was unable to travel to the United States for competition and training in January. A proposed dual meet between the United States and Russia, which was tentatively scheduled for January 14 in Madison, Wis. will not be held.    Russia did confirm that a team of top freestyle stars will travel to the United States in May, to participate in a pair of major international events, plus a World Dual meet.    The Russian team is scheduled to compete at the Freestyle World Cup in Baltimore, Md. on May 5-6, and the Dave Schultz Memorial International Championships in Colorado Springs, Colo. on May 11-12. Russia is traditionally one of the world's strongest wrestling nations. At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Russia won the medal count and unofficial team standings in freestyle wrestling, including an impressive four individual gold medals. The United States placed a close second to Russia in Sydney, and defeated three of their best athletes in head-to-head matches.    Wrestling competitions between the United States and Russia have a long and distinguished history, going back to the 1960's when Russia was a part of the former Soviet Union. The rivalry between these freestyle powerhouses have provided many historical moments in modern wrestling history.
