A pair of Olympic freestyle wrestling gold medalists, Dan Gable and Brandon Slay, will be the featured instructors at a wrestling clinic, held in conjunction with the 34th Annual National Wrestling Coaches Association All-Star Classic. The clinic will be held on Sunday, January 28 between 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Mayser Gym at Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, Pa. The NWCA All-Star Meet is scheduled for the next evening, Monday, January 29 at 7:30 p.m. This annual spectacular features the best athletes in each weight class in college wrestling competing in challenge matches. This event often determines the No. 1 individual ranking in the nation at each weight class. Gable and Slay represent the best of American wrestling from the past and present. Gable was an Olympic gold medalist at the 1972 Munich Olympics at 149.75 pounds, receiving international acclaim for his dominance and work ethic. He was also a 1971 World Champion. A two-time NCAA champion at Iowa State, Gable had one of the most outstanding folkstyle careers in history, losing only one match in his high school and college careers. He went on to become the greatest college coach of all time, winning 15 NCAA team titles as head coach at the Univ. of Iowa. Slay claimed a gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games at 167.5 pounds, the top performance of all U.S. freestyle wrestlers. He was a 2000 U.S. Nationals champion, and won a gold medal at the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team Trials. He is believed to be the first native Texan to qualify for a U.S. Olympic freestyle team. Slay placed second in the NCAA Div. I Championships on two occasions, competing for the Univ. of Pennsylvania. He is originally from Amarillo, Texas. Gable was one of the three co-head coaches who coached Slay to his tremendous performance at the Sydney Olympic Games. Tickets to the NWCA All-Star Classic are $12 per person. Coaches gain free admission to the Dan Gable and Brandon Slay Clinic by purchasing 35 All-Star Classic tickets. (Payment for the 35 tickets must be made by January 23, and is limited to the first 50 coaches who purchase the ticket minimum). This is an opportunity for young athletes, as well as sports fans, to witness the best of NCAA Div. I college wrestling. Tickets for the Dan Gable and Brandon Slay Clinic are $10 for adults and $5 for students (18 and under). It is suggested that local booster clubs should consider sponsoring wrestlers to attend this historic event. Make checks payable to Franklin and Marshall College, and mail them to Mike Moyer, National Wrestling Coaches Association, PO Box 254, Manheim, PA 17604.
